Modified tray for Pachmayr case
Ive got a 5 gun Pachmayr case and it holds a model 41 with optical sight on top, but I am afraid my eagerly awaited Clark wad gun wont fit. I cant lower the shelf, my scope needs all the room it can get. So I was wondering if anyone has ever modified the tray so the guns sit on an angle rather than streight up and down. It seems too easy, what am I missing?
Thanks for everyone who helped me get back into bullseye shooting, 40 years is too long to lay off, but its coming back.
Best

Re: Modified tray for Pachmayr case
Doc,
Welcome back!
Couple of questions.
1. How much more room do you need? 1/4" or 3/4".
2. What kind of mount, slide or frame?
3. If you change out to a lower ring height, can you make it fit?
Just throwing out a few things if you hadn't already considered them.

Re: Modified tray for Pachmayr case
Thanks Al: Good points. I'll see if I can get Clark Guns to send me an estimate of the height with optical attached. I know its going to be a frame mount; the model 41 with an slide mount (tapped barrel and weaver base) has about 3/4 inch of clearance with an UltraDot Match and the rings that came with it .

D,
You're most likely going to have to drop the drawer about an inch for anything with scopes to fit. I've done quite a few.

Re: Modified tray for Pachmayr case
I have a 5 gun Pachmayr case also.
Modified mine the down and dirty easy way.
Took one of my hobby saws(one with a whole bunch of small sharp teeth).
Where the drawer sits/slides on the left side, took and sawed that wood shelf an inch and removed it.
The drawer sits at an angle(lower on the left side by an inch).
All scoped guns are on the left side aimed to the right and fit perfectly.
Lid shuts with plenty of room for the scope.
No one will notice but you.
Functions fine.

Re: Modified tray for Pachmayr case
I'll try to post pictures soon of my 5 gun pachmayr.
I just pulled on that bottom divider below the tray until the metal staples gave way, cut 2 strips off of that piece to be the bottom rails for the tray, popped off the existing strips, dremeled off the old staples, then used a cheap harbor freight pneumatic stapler to staple the strips at a height that works for my scoped guns.

Re: Modified tray for Pachmayr case
One thing that worked for me was to make up a 3 wooden trays in place of the original tray. Each pistol was laid out horizontally in a tray instead of clamped upright in a vertical postion.
With a 4-gun Pachmayr box, I ended up with 3 trays in place of the original tray.

Thank you all. Great ideas. I spoke to Greg Wallock and he had a plan and can build the tray for me. Power tools are a scarey thing in my hands. C. Perkins, Bummer do you happen to have a photo of your modified box

Re: Modified tray for Pachmayr case
FWIW when the scoped guns took over I started carrying my pistols in a separate case. My thing was that if I modified the box for the scoped guns we ended up with problems with making the scope on the lid fit. Hated having an extra case to keep up with but it just worked best for me.
