I think the powders in question are too fast for the cartridge. A search of the Hodgdon.com load data shows no 231 or HP38 loads for 357 above the 158 grain projectiles. None, as in ZERO loads.

Sierra's 5th Edition Manual also shows no load data for heavy jacketed bullets.  (Sierra does not make or sell cast lead bullets.)  Not sure if a current Lyman manual shows 231 or HP38 loads for CAST bullet loads, but it might be worth checking there. Cannot find my Lyman manual, (45th edition), think they are up to the 47th or 49th edition now.

Hope this helps.

A quick review of load data from the Hodgdon Load Data site shows the starting 231 and HP38 loads generate higher pressure than 296 loads.  For 158 grain XTP loads, starting charges show a pressure around 34,000 CUP, whereas the 296 starting load (over twice the charge weight) shows a pressure around 29,000 CUP.   Note the 296 starting load also generates 300 FPS more MV than its competitors.

Hope this helps.

My mistake. Was thinking 296.

Jim Rock had some scary loads for 170-180 jacketed bullets.

there be lot of contradictory info online..

references to older winchester loading books that state one thing... references to others using 6.2 to 6.9 grains for 158 grain bullets,,, that was a reloading magazine i believe,,,

speer says use 4.5 to 5.4 for THIER 158 lswc in 357 magnum.

even seen reference to using 5.5 graisn for a 200 grain bullet in a magnum case.

im just trying to get something concrete in print.

Look for .38 special loads. I use 3.3 - 3.4gr of w231 under 158gr SnS coated swc.

Please verify for yourself.

Eindecker,

All the .357 Magnum is is an elongated .38 Special cartridge designed to handle higher pressure.   Using Max .38 Special load data in a .357 Magnum cartridge will provide low pressure/velocity, and will work just fine.

The Lee manual shows loads for up to 200 grain using both powders you asked about.

Well, I didn’t join in on the load data, but I DO have a nice shiny hook. Several. One is even Titanium!
