handgun twist rate and ammo selection
i have question maybe its very beginners tyoe.. well twist rate may have any effect of accuracy with bullet grains ? like we find the right bullet for our rifles so handgun shooting is like the same as rifles in selection of ammo ?

Re: handgun twist rate and ammo selection
There is a notion that twist rate can affect the accuracy of a pistol bullet. One notable belief is the increased accuracy of 38 Special 148 Wadcutters in 16 inch twist barrels. But the bullet stability of pistol bullets has never been extensively studied by ballisticians. So we really don’t know if there’s a fundamental reason why.

45 acp is offered in 1:16 twist by most manufacturers. KKM has a 1:13 twist available. 13 twist gives bullet higher rpm which stabilizes bullet at much lower velocities. With a GOOD bullet 3.0 BE shoots X at 50 yds: 622 fps.
Kart offers 16 twist 38 special barrels. KKM offers 10 & 16 twist. They all shoot X at 50 yds.
Clark used Douglas 10 twist in his two piece 38 special barrels. They hold X at 50 yds.
There’s been some other twist rate testing and similar results.
For our game twist is really irrelevant unless trying to slow things way down. Bullet quality is the most important aspect to cartridge accuracy.

Re: handgun twist rate and ammo selection
I don't own one, but isn't the M52's twist rate 1:10? Same as CZ and Sig 9mm barrels. I assume the bullet stability calculators are only for rifle BCs.Wobbley wrote:There is a notion that twist rate can affect the accuracy of a pistol bullet. Original S&W 52 barrel is 1:18.something. Clark Custom sells a 1:10 twist replacement barrel; external dimensions are all over the place.

Re: handgun twist rate and ammo selection
I don’t really know what twist was used in the 52. Gil Hebard, in his review of the S&W 52 as published in his pistol Shooter’s Treasury, stated that S&W tried twists from 10 to 18-3/4 and found that 38 Wadcutters still showed tipping. Nor did it appear to have any substantial difference in accuracy.
Bullet stability has a lot of factors to consider besides twist. We know from rifles that initial yaw induced from throating and bullet jump plays a big factor. Mass distribution and the aerodynamic center of pressure affect the bullet the entire flight. Pointy and even round nose bullets have been studied extensively. Wadcutters and semi-Wadcutters have not. A full wadcutter has the aerodynamics of a beer keg. It’s a wonder it shoots well at all really.
