1911 peep rear with silhouette front sight
A newbie to the shooting scene, so go easy on me if this is a ridiculous question.
I have an SA 1911 Garrison with the stock sights. I was wondering if it is possible to replace them with a peep rear sight and silhouette/globe front sight. Not sure if I'm even using the correct terminology. So, you would have an aperture at the rear with a small ball at the front.

Basically rifle iron sight setup like you’d find on an anschutz target rifle.
It’ll drive you crazy trying to hold 3 concentric rings steady with one hand.
Get some good pistol sights or use a dot.

If something that unconventional provided any sort of advantage, it would be in wide use in a competitive format somewhere.
Rear peep sights on conventional pistols (held at arm’s length) are not common in any precision sport, practical sport, or for hunting use.
Sharp notch and post sights and electronic dots have dominated for decades because they are the best ways to obtain repeatable, aligned sight pictures with pistols. Peep and globe sights are best left to disciplines and systems with long sighting planes and close eye/aperture placement (smallbore, 3-position, palma).

But, can it be done and still fall within NRA regulation?

Sure, in Open/Any Sights. You can put whatever you want on a pistol so long as it’s not a laser.
Not legal for Metallic Sights. That’s traditional notch and post only.

NRA rules limit sight radius. The fact the scopes and red dot sights are allowed should allow the sights you describe. The Aimpoint 9000SC mounted on the 1911 by the AMU with extension tube extends past the front of the slide. Diameter of the front and back is probably larger than the sights you describe so I see no issue with NRA sight rules. I would guess the tube type sights are no different than the sight you describe except there is no alignment requirement. So I think your only limit is the sight radius.

receiver peep sights need to be close to the eye, if it's not it will be almost impossible to see thru the peep hole

Sure - buy an 'Eye Pal'. It is a peep sticker that goes on your glasses.
The peep on a rifle does 2 things: it increases your depth of field to improve focus, and it acts as your rear sight. If you put the peep on your glasses you do not get the rear sight benefit, but you still get the focus benefit.
