Looking for someone...
There was a person on here that designed and maybe built pistol ranges. I cant place the name but I have a question more about a rifle range than a pistol range.
Specifically possible ricochet issues at 200-300yds from the target holders.

Ricochets from the target holders? You maybe need a more accurate rifle...

There is an NRA range design manual out there. I have it in iBooks but don’t know how to send it
Do you?

If you send me a PM with your email, I can send you a pdf copy of the NRA Range Resource Book. It has all you need to design your range.

Re: Looking for someone...
Allow me to shed some light on the premise to my question.
I belong to a local shooting club, Setup to run bullseye pistol, small bore 50-110yard.
Next range is 200 yard steel and paper 250 yard steel, 300 yard steel and paper.
Bunker s and berms around each side as well as the backstops, next range is all steel pistol targets, open on two sides bunkers on one side and a backstop bunker.
The steel target frames on the high power range are made of 4x4 treated junk, the weather eats them up as well as millions of bullets.
I have the ability to fabricate in my shop, so I offered a long term solution to the wooden steel target holders.
4" heavy wall pipe welded to the same dimensions as the existing wood structures. I was shot down mid sentence by all the experts of the day fearing a ricochet.
So far I have found no proof of a ricochet hazard in print. I do find that when an object traveling foreword at a given speed and it encounters an object that can change its trajectory it looses up to 50% of its foreword velocity. Thus dramatically decreasing the chance of a ricochet leaving the field of fire. Your thoughts ?

Re: Looking for someone...
We found that steel down range of rifles lead to bullets leaving the range. Each of our “gongs” were surrounded by wooden railroad ties and buried deep in to the enclosure. Bullets still left the range. We demolished the gongs. No more problems.
Our target frames are treated 2x4 and targets are on cardboard backers.
We don’t leave target backers in the rain. Each shooter gets a backer to staple their target on it. When the frames get shot up the caretaker replaces the 2x4.

This club has had steel gongs on chain at 200,250, and 300 yards for years. They are all angled downward and no cross firing allowed. Its the wood perimeter that I am trying to replace with 4" steel pipe.

Nice set up for slow bullseye lead velocities. I am directing my question to rifle velocities and distances.
Thanks

Could the range manual be put into the education forum?

Might contact Colemans Creek in Ellerbe, NC. (910) 585-3444.
These guys are military types with long distance rifle plates out to 1 Mile distance. They might have some suggestions, even though everything is steel plate, no paper hangers out past the 200 yard marker.

Good eye. Guessing the tilted Towers of Pisa were a clue. Lolstraybrit wrote:RodJ wrote:Our club BE range 50 yard line target frames are steel and look like this.

OP I’ll see if I can get photos of our 200/300 yard hi power rifle line.

Specifically the target or steel frames and holders if possible.

Re: Looking for someone...
I'm not sure about the support structure, but the frames are 2x4 that slide into sockets or brackets of some sort. So no metal near the target.
The uprights are 61", cross members 25". So with the cardboard backers at the top, there's a fair distance down to any significant amount of steel.
I'm sort of planning to make my own with wheels on it so I can have my own backers for different targets, and maybe mounts for an E-Target.

Those frame supports are engraved on my memory. I refurbished the 'A' range for the state match about 10 years ago. Just about put me in an early graveRodJ wrote:Good eye. Re: Looking for someone...
Straybrit, Are you local? Good job. Were you the welder? Unfortunately the land is so low the soil stays wet longer and the concrete post supports have moved and tilted the frames forward toward the line. Been mulling cutting and re-welding the frame back to vertical.
OP sorry for the thread drift but do consider possible ground shift in planning for ricochets

Re: Looking for someone...
I was - I was the match director there until 2015. I didn't weld the supports - they predate me by many years. I did realign them back in 2014 by using the tractor but all the flooding really screwed up the ground. TBH what it needed (and may still need) is some deep piles every 3rd or 4th upright to stabilize it. I was planning to do that but we moved before I got around to it.
I passed the plans on to Al when I left so Sam may have them now. I just did a search and I can't find a local copy.
