New model Colt Python
I just started shooting Bullseye 6 mo now and have 1911 45acp set up and a couple 22 pistols. I also just bought a new model Colt Python ( I love all Colts) and was shopping for reloading supplies and thought about possibly shooting my new Colt sometime. Anyone have a good load for a Python?

Any of the “normal” 38WC loads are at least worth a try. I tried even 3.5 Unique with a Speer HBWC and it was good. I’d suggest that you get some Federal 38 WC ammo and shoot that to establish an accuracy “baseline”. Every other ammo should shoot within an inch of that. Shoot at least 18 rounds (3 cylinders) to establish a group with each ammo you try.

Re: New model Colt Python
I guess my question was 158gr or the 148gr for my Colt........I didn't know if twist rate matters.

Most people seem to prefer the 148s regardless of gun. Many struggle getting a 158 load to shoot well.

Wilson combat makes a better rear sight for it. Tried a newer production 6" Python for a match but it didn't do so good, need to check mine for issues with the throats and forcing cone.

In answer to your first question: 38 SPCL
5.0 grains of Accurate N0. 5 under a 158 coated lead SWC.
This shoots well out of a 4.25" barrel length Python.
As many before me I did change to the Wilson sights. Get the set.

No one has mentioned (so far) that if you intend to use the Python for NRA Distinguished Revolver you have to use 158 lead bullets. Iron sights.
CMP Service Revolver is slightly different - 158gr any bullet, AFAIK. Iron sights.
For NRA/CMP Centerfire leg of a Precision Pistol match, any bullet, any weight in a 38/357 - AFAIK. Any sight.
There are other detailed rules - need to check the rule books to be sure.

That would be my plan. So I guess I will be testing 158gr bullets! Thanks,MCRoyDean wrote:No one has mentioned (so far) that if you intend to use the Python for NRA Distinguished Revolver you have to use 158 lead bullets. Iron sights.

Re: New model Colt Python
Sorry. For CMP Service Revolver. 158 is not mandated. AFAIK. So, many folks folks use 148 wadcutters for 25yds and 158 bullets at 50yds. Depends on gun, weather, etc.

Re: New model Colt Python
Are replacement sights legal for CMP revolver matches. I thought the revolvers were required to be “As Issue”.

Legal for Precision Pistol and think the Reeves match, trigger is horrible compared to any S&W 14 or 27. Actually, I think my J frames have better triggers.
