In conferring with several active (and very nice, experienced) shooters at the range the topic of conversation concerned when or even if to use magnum primers in reloading pistol cartridges. These gentlemen shot and reloaded for rifle predominantly.

Some advised to employ magnum primers for cartridges specifically termed magnum i.e. 357 magnum etc.
Some advised that they were for the most part interchangeable....just try them and see which works best in your firearm
Some advised to employ magnum primers for cold climate shooting

My primary focus however is for bullseye pistol shooting.

Wondering what the Bullseye pistol community advocates? thank you

I've heard the cold climate rationale and that magnum primers give more consistent powder ignition.  There are high level shooters on this board whose opinion I respect who use Winchester primers for these reasons so there is probably something to this.  Winchester doesn't have a dedicated magnum primer and are reported to be a bit more powerful than other brands.

I'd like to just use Winchester primers for consistency and simplicity.  Unfortunately, I haven't seen any locally in a long time.  Anymore I'm happy to find any LPP on the shelf no matter the brand.

My comments are specific to bullseye velocities.

What Scott said, plus we’re not (usually) using maximum loads where a substitution could cause problems.

You can also use small rifle primers for standard target loads as they are the same Depth. They may be harder so try a few if you go that route. Lg rifle have same issues but are proud of the brass too. Never had one slamfire but somtimes would not chamber in tight headspace barrels. They won't work in revolver.
