What 22.lr ammo for a Walther GSP?
For the Walther GSP owners out there, what is your favorite 22lr ammo for the GSP? I'm hoping to save some testing time.

Feed it a steady diet of CCI Standard Velocity, all my BE pistols should cycle this.
Eley, S&K, Lapua or RWS as funds allow, all will hold 10 ring or better at 50yards.
Aguila runs well, groups open up a bit.
1085fps or lower.
clean every 1k rounds.

Agree with Fezzik: the dozen or so GSPs I've either used or talked with others who were using seem run anything *standard velocity* very reliably.
At least in my hand/gun, CCI Standard Velocity seems noticeably less consistent at 50 yards than Eley Target. I had some good results from a box of SK Pistol Match I experimented with last month, but need to order more than the single box I had to see if that was something meaningful.

Re: What 22.lr ammo for a Walther GSP?
I had some 'free' time during Covid.
Initially just looking to get experience with Ransom Rest & Labradar
Decided to test every brand .22 I had on hand through a Ruger Mark III.
Everything that chrono'd near CCI Std Vel & below,
I ran through my GSP & RR for group at 50 feet or 50 yards, most everything held 10 ring.
CCI, Eley, S&K, RWS, & Lapua all held X-Ring at 50 yards.
Shoot well!

I have several Hammerli Essex that will hold X ring from the bench at 50 yards with SK Pistol Match. No failure to feed, extract or fire issues to speak of. Had 2 maybe 3 failure to feed out of two cases worth of the stuff.

Fezzik, out of curiosity, how old was the CCI Std. ammo you were testing?
Lots of folks are saying CCI ain't what it used to be - and my limited experience seemed to track with that. Your testing is more thorough than anything I've attempted, hence my interest in context.

It was newer CCI, I tend to turn it over fairly frequently.
I did recently find some older (dark blue) boxes.
Now I'm curious if there is a detectable difference.

Re: What 22.lr ammo for a Walther GSP?
To me, 22LR ammo comes in two varieties: “Come to meeting’” and “Git ‘er Done”. Come to Meetin’ is your best or better shooting ammo that you shoot at upper level matches. And Git ‘er Done is training ammo and “club monthly match”. The Training ammo is CCI SV, Aguila, Magtech and other bulk 22s that are reasonably accurate and functional. The Upper level match ammo is the SK Standard, Norma Match 22, Eley, etc. There are some that can be used for both like Norma TAC 22 and some others.
So, ammo for a higher end pistol like your Walther GSP …. If it was my pistol, I’d try to see what your gun likes in the SK, Norma, Eley and other upper end brands, buy a couple of bricks of that, then look at the lesser grades like Magtech, CCI, Norma TAC, Sellier and Bellot, Federal (AutoMatch) and find some that are reliable and accurate enough…. This was a test of S&B SV. That’s good enough for daily use and club matches.

Re: What 22.lr ammo for a Walther GSP?
I tend to agree with Ashley, when I was starting out with a greater than 7 ring hold, anything was fine for tightening up groups.
As my hold improved, I wanted better ammo.
My current 8 ring-ish hold, bang for the buck, CCI will still out shoot me.
I do move to Eley or S&K for league and matches as needed.
Can't shake being a 'frugal yankee'

I'm not loving the current cci std. vel. It functions fine but I get occasional flyers and it doesn't group as well as some other brands. SK standard plus has been the best so far. Real target ammo in my state is hard to find and expensive. I can order ammo and have it sent to an ffl dealer but all the extra fees, delivery charges and taxes make it hard to justify unless I order in bulk. To do that I need to know what works. That's why I need the advice of the knowledgeable members here. So, if there's a 22 ammo your GSP loves I'd like to hear about it.

I recommend testing through your own pistol as time and funds allow, here's my data.

Are you in CA? If yes, and you would like to get mail order, there is a way. You can get a FFL03 ($30 for 3 years) and a CA COA (about $100 first year and lower after that), and then have ammo shipped to your door.Nopro wrote: I'm not loving the current cci std. vel. Not every ammo vendor will do it, but a lot of the big ones, like Target Sports, will ship to you with those.

Yes, I'm in California. Thank you Fezzik68 for the test data. That helped a lot. Thanks to wheellock for your suggestions as well. I had never heard of an FFL03 or a Ca COA. For the benefit of others like myself, can you explain further on what these licenses are and how to get them?

Better hurry. Our lovely state has an (additional) tax of 11% on all guns and ammo starting July 1.
Weather's good though

Another tax...that should stop the crime problem. Oh well, there's always archery.
