Recommendation for 9mm ammo
I've been shooting a 9mm in the center fire rounds and would like recommendations for good quality 9mm ammo that I can purchase for matches and practice.
I know I would be better off loading my own, but I'm new to the sport and have not started to re-load yet. For now, I would like to shoot off-the-shelf ammo and was wondering if anyone has had good results with a particular brand/type.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I’d shop the “big box” stores. For 9mm 115 and 124 FMJ ammo from Winchester, Federal, Fiocchi, Remington, Blazer, Sellier and Bellot, and Magtech brands. Buy a box of each that you can afford and try them in your pistol. Find the one your gun likes by shooting it. Then buy 500 to 1000 rounds.

Atlanta arms, Winchester white box or equivalent have been my factory options of choice in that order. Atlanta is a bit more dear cost wise, but probably more consistent.

I haven't had a chance to test it, but the CMP has Creedmoor 115gr if you have a 1:32 barrel. If it's the more common 1:16 then 124 or 147 will probably work better.

I have a recent manufacture Colt Gold Cup National Match in 9mm. Which Atlanta Arms 9mm ammo would be best for the long line?

Re: Recommendation for 9mm ammo
It depends on the barrel twist rate. If it's 1:32 then 115 or 124 gr. If it's 1:16 then 124, and 147 gr *may* work. Some folks have had success others no so much with 147 in a 1:16 barrel. If it's 1:10 then the 147 gr subsonic round should do well, but you may have to experiment with hammer and/or recoil springs for good function.flyer898 wrote:I have a recent manufacture Colt Gold Cup National Match in 9mm. As the B-16, 25 yard slow fire target ten ring is 1.51", even the best groups shown aren't that impressive.S148 wrote:Maybe some useful information here:

The Browning 147 FP did pretty well, especially when you consider it was a 50- shot group.

Thanks for all the responses. Atlanta arms doesn't appear to have much in stock now though.

The CMP has Creedmore 9mm match ammo for sale, but it is pricey.

This is decent ammo for the price these days.

Re: Recommendation for 9mm ammo
I went distinguished using 124 gr SwissP FMJ. it's a great price, has pretty brass, and shoots well out of my Swiss P210. It's made at the same plant as Swiss Military ammo (Thun). My best Slow Fire score is a 96 with the group size being about the outer edge of the 9 ring.

Re: Recommendation for 9mm ammo
As stated by others above, it very much depends on the barrel twist rate. The P210's have fast twist barrels and as mentioned really like 147 bullets and somewhat lower velocity - reloading really helps (Hornady 147XTP over 4.3 of Power Pistol worked well for me). The Atlanta Arms stuff is excellent, but sometimes hard to find and quite expensive. Keep it for important matches. I tried Winchester White Box and several other brands of 115 ammo, using several different 9mm guns, I never found any of the cheap off-the-shelf ammo to be good enough for Bullseye. But no doubt others can prove me wrong. That SwissP ammo sounds very good.

Barrel twist rate
Sir: You mention that it very much depends on twist rate..... Can you expand on that? I know that when dealing with rifles (and their much longer barrels) that bullet weight (actually length) and barrel rate of rifling twist are like peas and carrots. I never thought the same applies to handguns.RoyDean wrote:As stated by others above, it very much depends on the barrel twist rate. So... is there a general rule of thumb considering handgun twists and bullet weight (length ?) Maybe more specific to 1911's in 9mm and 45acp.

Re: Recommendation for 9mm ammo
OK. So this subject has been debated at great length in many other threads. And, I definitely do not profess to be an expert. What I do know is that SIG P210 American have a 1:10 fast twist barrel and work much better with softer 147JHP loads. I got most of my Service Pistol leg points with that gun/ammo. Most 1911 9mm guns use slower twist 1:32 barrels and, generally, like higher velocity 115 bullets (Atlanta Arms Elite being a notable match choice). But they are very snappy and require a much firmer hold, IMHO!
There are many military shooters using Beretta's with snappy 115 ammo. But they are young and strong with good eyes. I have none of those attributes!
If you choose to shoot a slow twist 9mm, then try some AA Elite ammo in 115 and 124 and see what you get.
