Loctite for Loose Dovetail Front Sight
I removed a dovetailed front sight from a new Colt 1911. It was tight. I’ve read Colt uses a 0.33x65x0.075 dovetail cut. So I just got a new Kensight 0.033x65x0.075 sight and it slides in with finger pressure. Turn the slide sideways and shake and the sight falls out.
I want to use this sight with no shim or peening. Will Blue Locktite hold it, or Red Locktite?
Thanks
Rush

Loctite 680 (green) retaining compound will fill gaps on a slip fit.

Take a center punch and put a dimple or two on the underside of the sight dovetail. That puts a burr in place and also acts to widen the dovetail.

Hello Rush223,
Dovetail front sights are a "fitted" part. Buy a better (larger) size and do the installation correctly. It's not difficult. You'll thank me later.

You need a "mechanical" lock on the front sight in most applications, not chemical. It may be good for a while, but in many cases the front sight will go south when you really need it not to. I would see if you can get a slightly larger sight from Kensight.

You can add a shim under the sight. Aluminum can stock if good as is brass. I have used paper with loctite retaining compound.
Do not buggar up the gun.
You could work on the sight. IF you take the side of a punch and a small hammer you can roll up the center edge of dovetail on the sight.
I do not like punch marks on the sight or the gun. They do little to tighten it and scratch up the parts when the sight is drifted into place.
Loctite is a brand. They make lots of products. This stuff is permanent and incredibly strong. I have not it had it break lose on sights or underlugs.

This looks like it is almost like solder, I will buy some to try it looks useful:

A properly fitted sight will be better for sure. good luck.

Look up Loctite 680 its not for threads, its a retaining compound. You will run out of primers before you shoot the dovetail sight loose.

I learned a lot from this video by Dawson Precision on installing sights. His technique has worked very well for me.
In the video Mr. Dawson advocates applying Loctite 620 for some additional "insurance"...(scroll to time point 16.22 if you don't wish to see the video in it's entirety)
