NRA membership as a prerequisite
Why do some clubs that host bullseye leagues in which the matches are NOT approved or registered, still require NRA membership for participation? For that matter, why do some clubs require NRA membership to simply join that club?

I can not speak for requiring NRA membership for participation in "outlaw" matches. However from a club membership perspective, it can be somewhat of a weed out requirement of sorts.

At one time I was a member of a club that insured through the NRA. I believe there was a financial incentive to have100% NRA membership.

This is the reason for 100% NRA membership.Drawman623 wrote:At one time I was a member of a club that insured through the NRA. I believe there was a financial incentive to have100% NRA membership.

Re: NRA membership as a prerequisite
The NRA provides grant opportunities to clubs for range work up to $ 5,000.00. This was through the State and Club Association's division. A requirement for consideration was a % 100 NRA member club.
The insurance is written independently through preferred brokers. NRA club membership was a pre-requisite too apply for the insurance. Individual membership was not a requirement for this and did not impact the policy price a club would pay.
Currently NRA cannot mandate NRA membership to shoot NRA matches, and there are some non-members who participate. Cannot imagine why a club would turn away participants and their money.

NRA used to require membership to shoot at the Nationals. It may have also been required for any competition but I don't really remember that for sure. The membership requirement went away about the time they introduced the Endowment for the Nationals. (Timely that the statement by John Sigler is also in threads at the moment) Seems to me that there was some sort of legal structure that prevented requiring membership in NRA with the endowment structuring.

I belong to a couple of clubs that require NRA membership and I'm glad that they do. There has been a lot of bathwater with the NRA over the last several decades but there are babies in the tub too.

I belong to two clubs that insure through the NRA and therefore require membership. I am not happy about to, but it is what it is.

Parents owned a range in Nothern Indiana from the 70's to the early 2000's. We were an NRA club and to join the club you had to be a NRA member. Insurance was through the NRA and it was a requirement from them at that time.

Wow! I shot there, Winamac, numerous times, I have one of the infamous Reinholt Mug's from the Action Pistol Match. Good group that competed there. Some of the best shooters in the world would gather there the weekend before Bianchi.rreinholt wrote:Parents owned a range in Nothern Indiana from the 70's to the early 2000's. Our club hosts an NRA regional. NRA membership is required to compete. I am not sure if it is an NRA requirement or a club requirement though.John Dervis wrote:NRA used to require membership to shoot at the Nationals. I won a Mug during a Fall AP Regional. Dad was all smiles awarding it to me. The characters who showed up to practice and shoot the State match before Bianchi Cup were great and the stories I could tell.... Maybe I shouldn't to protect the guilty.
