One eye or two when using dot sight?
Good evening!
At age 65 I'm going to try bullseye shooting again.
But I do have a question.
My centerfire and rimfire pistols now sport dot sights.
Because of defensive shooting, I have been shooting with both eyes open. Now, not a big deal.
BUT I'm right hand shooter; left eye dominate.
Since we use one hand in bullseye, this radically changes my stance/eye alignment.
My question is to continue to use both eyes or go back to a more traditional bullseye stance and close (blinder) the left eye?
Suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

With a left eye dominant but right handed I’d use a blinder.

I was leaning that way.
Always nice to have another opinion to help make the process easier!

I'm the same, right handed, left eye dominant. I use a blinder on my right eye, for both the dot and iron sights.

I'm right-handed and left eye dominant. When shooting a dot I occlude my right eye and shoot using my left eye.
When shooting irons I reverse the process, occluding my left and aiming with the right. Why? Because my uncorrected right eye vision gives me a clear front sight image.
YMMV.

I am right hand dominant and right eye blind, so I shoot cross dominate. I find that I need to bend my wrist to see the dot which causes discomfort in my wrist.
How do those of you that shoot cross dominate handle the grip and wrist position with a 45?

Just want to clarify your question blueberryman…use both eyes open and shoot with dominant left eye with no blinder, or use a blinder over the dominant left eye and shoot with non-dominant right eye?
Do what feels natural for you. You’ll get multiple replies to what works for each individual.
For myself being right handed and left eye dominant, I shoot with my left eye with both eyes open and no blinders. Never felt the need for it because you won’t see 2 red dots while looking through the tube assuming you’re using an Ultradot or similar. I’ve never felt off balanced and never had a wrist problem.
Just be 99% concern with trigger control and nothing else.

Right hand, right eye dom. Always shooting with both eyes open. No devices to obscure the non dominant eye…

I shoot right handed and switched from right eye to left eye prior to the outdoor season this year. My approach was to maintain the alignment between my wrist and arm and adjust my feet accordingly, the same as you would to accommodate your natural point of aim.SonOfSwede wrote:I am right hand dominant and right eye blind, so I shoot cross dominate. Dominance
I'm very RH & R eye dominant. Had to switch to shooting LH about 5 yrs ago due to RH tremors.
No big deal with shooting port side still using the right eye. I just rotated the pistol in my hand & made a slight change in my stance so the sights are lined up. Went from shooting high expert scores to low marksman scores, primarily due to having a left index finger that's really uneducated. It still beats working.

BTW, I've always shot with both eyes open.

i keep both eyes open. as per the pistol handbook, since you will fatigue the shooting eye while closing the other eye, a sympathetic reaction, believe it or not.
i used a blinder for a short time but found it blocked too much light for my old eyes. what ever works for you and welcome back, red dots let us old timers shoot like youngsters again. lol

Re: One eye or two when using dot sight?
I shoot right handed and am left eye dominant. Tried shooting cross handed but couldn't get a good grip and stance. Now I occlude the left (dominant) eye. I use a white occluder so some light gets through. I found it easier to learn to shoot with the right eye than the left hand. My left eye occasionally tries to take over, but this happens less and less with time.

Thanks for all the replies!
I’m headed to the range and will be working on the peepers situation.
The biggest change is going from an isocilies or weaver modified/ both eyes open to a single hand bullseye stance.
I have no issues using 2 hands and both eyes open… just move the pistol over to the left and tilt/ turn the head to accommodate the left dominate eye. If you watch Hickok45, he shoots (like he is left eye dominant) much the same way I do.
Changing to 1 handed bullseye challenges the stance from a standard bullseye stance to a more forward facing one in order to sight with the dominant left eye. When I do this, I can still keep both eyes open.
The alternative is to go back to bullseye stance and close/ blinder the left eye and see what works best.

Re: One eye or two when using dot sight?
Right handed, right eye dominant. Tremors, switched to my left hand. 'Scotch Tape', the frosted variety on myvright lens.
Need to keep the light level somewhat close in both eyes, a full 'blinder' will make both Iris's open up to accommodate the reduction in light. Might blur your vision a bit, or at least mess with 'depth of field' ...
Which isn't actually a thing to begin with ... LOL !!!!
