Which .45acp revolver for me?
I'm thinking of trading my fairly new Springfield Range Officer for a .45acp revolver. I use the .45 mainly for combat type matches. Would I be better off looking for a S&W 625 with a 4" or 5" bbl? Regular 625 vs. PC vs. JM?What about a S&W 25 with 6" bbl? I do not want DA only. Looking for accuracy not cosmetic looks. Any feedback based on experience will be appreciated.

Re: Which .45acp revolver for me?
Jerry,
I have 3 .45 revolvers and shoot them all the time. I HIGHLY recommend you get a Model 625 with the 5 inch barrel. Put a Weigand scope mount on it to mount your favorite red dot sight. Use the Hogue Monogrips grips on it. Learn to hold your thumb straight up next to the hammer. Grip the gun as high on the grip as you can to cut down recoil jump.
As for loads, start with a 200 grain cast bullet over 4 grains of Bullseye, 4.8 grains of W231, 4 grains of WST or similar for the 50 yard line. For the 25 yard line, shoot 185 grain bullets (or less) over 4 grains of W231 or 3.5 grains of Bullseye or WST or Clays. I use Federal primers.
Oh, and get a good action job done on the revolver. Clark Custom Guns does a nice job and there are quite a few other smiths out there. It is not hard to find a good revolver smith.
Keep in touch!

Thanks Bill. I am limited to iron sights only for my intended use. Maybe an older model 25 would be better since they come in 6" bbl?

Jerry,
I have a Model 25 and two model 625's. The 625 wins hands down. Get the 5 inch barrel, it balances perfectly and shoots great. What are you going to use it for, ICORE or some other speed shooting? You can't use it for the Harry Reeves or Distinguished Revolver matches.

Actually I'm going to use it at my local club's once a month PPC match. 7, 15, 25, and 50 yard 1500 match. Would you still recommend the 625-5"? I have a lead on one for $700+.

For a PPC match I would use a .38 - probably a Smith 586 or 686. I still like the 625 over the old Model 25 in .45 caliber. I've never shot PPC but others on this board have (Scott Lorenz).
