Powder close to Bullseye CSB-5 ? Empty Powder close to Bullseye CSB-5 ?

Post by Joe Manco 9/18/2014, 3:44 am

Hello all, new member here. Haven't shot bullseye in over 10 years and looking to get back into it. Bought a Range Officer and plan to mount an ultra dot on it. Also have a Nelson Custom .22 conversion for it. Ok, can't find any Bullseye powder anywhere. While searching I ran across some new to the U.S. Commercial CSB-5 powder. It has been said that it's very similar to Bullseye, very fast burning. Problem is I can't find any real load data on it. Anyone use it. I'm looking to load .45acp 200g SWC. Thanks and hope to get to know some of you and get back to shooting on a winter league soon.

Thanks, I have seen that but it doesn't give any bullet info other then one weight, don't know if it's lead or fmj, no oal ect. I need to load 200g lswc and don't want to just make up my own starting point. Don't want to turn my new gun into my last gun, lol.

My load for bullseye powder is 3.8 gr under that bullet with the shoulder of the bullet just a skosh above the case mouth.  Based on the MFRs data for 230gr, I think you would be safe starting with that load.

Load data at lower end looks very close to Bullseye, per my old Lyman manual and the freebee Aliant/Hercules loading books.  NOTE: per the freebees 5.0 is max at about 16K.  Not sure how you boost velocity to 1000fps within acceptable pressure levels (17K) unless the upper end loads are +P.

According to that load info its not that close to bullseye, 4.5 grains of BE sends a 200 gr. lswc a lot faster than 771 fps, but that would be where I would start. powders close to BE, tightgroup, Vit-310, clays, all load bout the same as it does.

The link to the chart above is based on a 230g not a 200g.

in that case it would be close with a 200 lswc, 4,0 would be a good start.

Powder close to Bullseye CSB-5 ? Empty Re: Powder close to Bullseye CSB-5 ?

I've been having absolutely no luck finding powder lately and subsequently purchased 8lbs of CSB-5 as a result of reading this thread.

I'd never heard of nor purchased from American reloading but I was surprised to have the powder delivered quickly.  I've not had a chance to test for 50yd accuracy but so far 4.0gr behind a zero 185 swaged HP seems to be a suitable short line load in my guns.  Despite a large flake size, much like Clays, the powder does seem to meter well in a Dillon measure.

the CSB-5 is from Maxam
and is used and marketed in other countries by RIO
including the US
RIO  is putting together a new plant in Texas   new RIO plant  (they are not a fly by night outfit that sells unknown products, they have been around for over a century)

i have 10lbs of CSB-1 to use in 9mm and 40
and i want to grab some CSB-5 for 38 and 45

think of CSB-1 as unique/universal sort of powder in fact Universal load data looks just fine for it
CSB-5 is faster  think green dot/red dot/titegroup   and it seems green dot data should be ok

here is some chrono data from my CSB-1 work in 9mm

should be plenty of room for more speed
ill be doing more work next week

and ill try to get some CSB-5 to mess with
im very happy with the CSB-1
