Modify rear sight on ball gun
I'm thinking about widening the notch in my rear sight so the gaps on each side of the post are about 1/2 the width of the post. Right now they appear as slivers of light.
Has anyone done this did it help or hurt.

I'm going to mic each side of the notch and take off the same amount on each side so hopefully I don't have to re-zero.

Re: Modify rear sight on ball gun
This is a common modification. Many Euro guns have a notch that can be adjusted for each different range's lighting conditions.
I have experimented with this. I've even been making my own custom sights. Olympic pistols have fronts that are adjustable for width to match the preference of the shooter. If the guys shooting the highest scores in the world like it, it's worth investigating.

Works well, but "watch" what you're doing. Use a safe edge file and try to keep the original angles to the side(s) of the notch. Favor having a narrower surface on the rear, so that you can't see the inner surface of the notch, only a true clean view of the rear surface. If possible, set up a jig, unless you're really good at freehand work.

Older eyes need more light on each side of front sight. I say go for it.

Re: Modify rear sight on ball gun
I have done this job by standing a small square on the rib of my Bomar and using it to guide a diamond file. I screwed it up years ago and this has worked well to correct the case of "leans" I got from the previous attempt. Use a piece of scotch tape on the edge of the square to keep the file from getting it out of true. I like having a little more light around the front sight. Touch it up or just use a good sight smoker to keep the glare down.

+1 to Ed Halls comments. I did it freehand and with a LOT of patience I only messed it up a little. One edge is angled slightly, but it works for me.
If you have access to a good machinist this is a piece of cake on a mill.
You will expose fresh steel so you want to oil it if you don't finish it in one day and then use cold blueing to protect the metal longer term.
