3 or 4 Gun Case
First topic message reminder :
Looking to finally get a BE box and I'm looking at the TnB Strong Case boxes after seeing lots of them at league nights. I like the space in the 4 gun box, but man, it looks like its large and once loaded up, heavy. However, I've heard that it doesn't fall over in the car (not sure if the 3 gun does...) and that it provides more space for all the stuff you need to drag with you plus the ability to throw in a back up gun.
Is a 3 gun box adequate or should I start with a 4 gun for the long haul? I don't want to buy something twice and the price is pretty close between the two.

Re: 3 or 4 Gun Case
I have several pistol boxes and the one that gets used most is the 1608. Those extra mags you were worried about will all fit into the extra storage compartment. I also use the large flat space to store my Reeves pistol and loaded clips. I am not too worried about the extra weight. The more stuff I can cram in the bottom the lower the CG for the case. I usually have enough spare parts/tools in the bottom to keep me (or others) going thru a match. Lots of room for extra ammo too. I also have a set of wheels for it if it starts feeling a tad heavy. No scratching from the clamps but I did let a 41 get to close to a scope mount screw on another pistol once. That left a "stupid" mark.

For Perry just take a strap and secure it to the bench. One less thing to worry or think about. When the gust come they're not predictable.

I have a 4 gun box. Older Pachmayer, works well for the average club matches, bring along back-up stuff in another older Pachmayer 3 gun box. 2 years ago my other son Frank Jr. purchased a nice 2 gun box at Perry and used it for the match except the Warm-up (Three 300's one for each of the .22 CF and .45 guns info. for those that haven't been to Perry) I liked that 2 gun box too and was thinking about buying 2 of them that way on the warm-up match both can be wheeled to the range in a 4 wheel cart the after the .22 match, just grab the other box out of the cart sitting at the 50 yard bench. Then during the rest of the match only one needed to be taken to the line.

The 2 gun box is also very stable. It's 10" wide and stubby. I use mine mostly for the winter league and put a pair of .22's in it. They are short on room but if you are just using it for backups or for your EIC guns there is more than enough room for box of hardball and some .22 ammo. The scope fits into that extra couple of inches of width so you don't gain much room for your pistols in the box. They can be handy like Frank has in mind.

The problem I have is the frame on my wad gun is rubbing on the metal fingers.
If the box/fingers were wood it would be irrelevant.
I was thinking I could dremel some relief into the fingers so that the pistol fits.
I used some felt in the interim to cover the front of the fingers so the aluminum doesn't scratch the frame mount.

I have the 2008 3gun box, with scope mounted on the lid it is possible to fit 6 or 7 if you wanted if they were in sleeves/socks They do sell a 4gun tray to replace the 3gun tray if you want an upgrade. This 20" wide model is large enough for my TOZ35m free pistol or a Pardini K10 10m pcp pistol. I do carry my ammo in a separate bag, loading everything in one box is silly as it gets HEAVY fast, my shoulder strap hooks are bending out so will look at the golf-bag strap upgrade. I did have it fall off a table once when the lid was locked open and it resulted in a slightly bent lid and bent scope arm, both of which were serviceable after 5 minutes of more bending, i would strap it to the table for windy conditions.I do alternate my guns and have never been to Perry.
Typical guns carried for a match:
Wad gun
.22 gun, with separate red-dot barrel
EIC gun
Distinguished Revolver

Re: 3 or 4 Gun Case
Have you had any trouble fitting it on benches?
Thanks for the response,

If you shoot one gun each for .22, CF and .45 and there's a DR and EIC match, you are up to five guns, plus the usual stuff you carry, plus a bag or can for all the ammo, and a cooler, and a chair, you have a load regardless. I start feeling like the grunt who said, "If the Army issues me one more pound of light weight gear my load will be at an even 90 pounds."

I'm traveling with my case on airlines so I want to have it as "carry on" vice checking it where the airline will destroy it. So the SRC-2008 was the biggest thing I could get and meet the luggage restrictions. There were some earlier comments about having trouble fitting it on the bench, but haven't heard any specifics. I went ahead and bought one, and hopefully, I'll like it. I did notice it doesn't have the nice rubber feet though, which are standard on the 1608. Bummer.
I have a 22/45/Ball Gun, but I'll probably acquire a backup 22 and a revolver.
I think I'll end up with a 5 gun box for local matches or those that I can drive to and keep the 2008 for the airline.
Some of the smarter folks in the room at the Fleet matches had gone to Wal-Mart and bought a Magna Cart Ideal. I'll probably grab one for Perry.

Re: 3 or 4 Gun Case
I tried one of those Magna-Carts at Perry for one year. Nearly impossible to drag it through the grass from the parking lot to the ready line. I've been using a game cart with large spoke wheels which rolls over the grass quite well, but I plan to get one of those four wheel fold up canvas carts that a lot of shooters are using. Some shooters use the two wheel fold up "geezer" carts; I thing they are called dock carts which have large wheels.JayhawkNavy02 wrote:AllAces wrote:If you shoot one gun each for .22, CF and .45 and there's a DR and EIC match, you are up to five guns, plus the usual stuff you carry, plus a bag or can for all the ammo, and a cooler, and a chair, you have a load regardless. Re: 3 or 4 Gun Case
Jay,
Only been to two different ranges for BE matches and a few other local ranges for practice and no issues with bench space, yet. My 2008 did have the screw on rubber feet when it was purchased, i wonder if someone forgot to install yours? I did have to loctite them back on by the third use as two fell off and the other two were a few turns loose. Luckily the matches that i have attended were close to the cars, a cart will eventually be added to the mix to save on multiple trips to the car when loading and unloading for when its a distance away from the line.
