Has anyone tested primers to see if match primers really do anything other than cost a little more?

federal match are very consistent, somewhere on the net is a video of how they are made, they are not as hot as cci or Winchester. Consistency is your friend in target shooting, but I only buy them when the price is close to Winchester which is what I use most.
