Found some Winchester 231? Empty Found some Winchester 231?

Post by beeser Sun Jan 18, 2015 12:34 pm

I've been looking for some Winchester 231 for a while.  After looking at the powder equivalent chart at the head of this forum section I may have had some all along in the way of PB.  Is it exactly the same the way that HP38 is the same as Winchester 231 or is it just equivalent?

231 and hp38 are the Same powder according to the manufacturer. Just labeled different. Pb is not.

PB? Is not equivalent. It is usable using existing loading data. It is a slower burning powder designed for heavy shot loads in shotguns and handguns.

Winchester is a licensed brand name they do not make powder, hp38 is the powder that is put into the w231 cans and sold, same exact powder just different names

Look at the "sticky" DavidR posted. The Pb is equivalent, it is just not the same powder. Within 5% as stated on the chart.

The question is in a way moot now.  I purchased some HP38 today at my LGS while picking up my new to me S&W 617.
