Best Match Ammo for Model 41
Hi All,
I am trying to improve my 22lr scores. I have a SW model 41 and would like to optimize the ammo I use for matches. I currently use CCI Standard Velocity. Are there other brands of ammo out there which others have had better results? Looking for improved precision without increased case trapping, which is a problem for the model 41.
Best,
Joe

You have to go out and try them. I have tried some Fiocchi 40 gr HP SV and Norma TAC. Both shot really well, better than CCI SV but your gun may choose to be different.

Eley Target works really well in mine. Better yet was the now gone Federal 900B.

Order a set of recoil springs from Wolf> You might find some of the brands suggested accurate but just a touch weak.

When I was shooting an M41 it worked very well with CCISV and Center X.
The trapped cases is usually caused by the case hitting the sight extension and coming back down and getting trapped.
I installed a Clark barrel with no sight extension and my alibies of trapped casings went away.
Just try different types of ammo cause your gun will be different from others.
As far as CCISV, I have shot in the 870's with it so don't give up on it.

Re: Best Match Ammo for Model 41
I presently use Aguila SuperExtra (Eley Prime). I've heard that some people with 41's have trouble with it, but it cycles in mine with little problems. Once in maybe a few hundred rounds, I'll get a stove pipe or failure to feed. Groups are tight and I have shot some of my best targets with it. I also use CCI SV. The CCI also has some of the same issue as the Aguila but it's similar otherwise. Incidentally, my 41 was my grandfathers who shot it competitively from the early 70's till he retired from a very successful BE career in the early 2000's. It's got countless rounds through it and serves me well. I also don't think the springs have been swapped in years. The only thing I've added was a buffer (and the Aguila ammo... and I swapped out the Herrett Natl's for Rink grips that fit my hand much better).

Re: Best Match Ammo for Model 41
Joe, I own and shoot several .22s including a Marvel Conversion, a Victor and of course a Model 41 and I've owned two 41s. When I acquired each of these guns I go through my standard drill of going to the range with the "new" .22 and about 12-14 different brands & types of ammo with the gun in a Ransom Rest. 50 yards is my accuracy determination because 25 yards is of little consequence to me, because at 75 feet traveling at about 1,000 fps .a .22 round has little time to be inaccurate.
Of the 12-14 brands & types of ammo tested in my 41, SK Pistol Match Special is head & shoulders above CCI, Remington 6100, Federal Match, Ely Black Box, Wolfe Match, etc., etc. This ammo is German manufacture and somewhat pricey and availability can be sketchy, it is worth the improved accuracy and no jambs. If you get the opportunity to try some SK Pistol Match Special, you may be pleasantly surprised. Hope this info helps.

Re: Best Match Ammo for Model 41
Hi Joe, my 41 is problematic at best. I changed out the standard bbl for the Clark bbl as i had bought the weapon used and the original bbl was not holding at 50 yds. Of course, the empties were trapping, two or three per match, so i sent it to Clark for adjustment. it still traps occasionally, some ammo worse than others. One caveat, I cannot stand a barrel heavy gun so the barrel sight extension removal was not an option. I like the balance of the weapon over the hand. The buglight is an old ultra dot 1" with the rings changed to Weaver ultra lows. i need the bug light as low to the bore line as possible. i can squeeze out an 880 on a good day averaging 875 last season. i tried various grips and settled on a pair of Herritt trainers that simulate a 1911 grip angle and feel. The original 41 grips feel all wrong and the Rink orthos i had trouble recovering in rapid fire.
Reference ammo I have ransom rested with the following results: Eley pistol match grouped .96" at 50yds ave vel 862; Eley Club 1.01" at 50 yds ave vel 935; SK+ 1.42" at 50 yds ave vel 931; eley 10x red 1.56" at 50 yds ave vel 969; CCI green tag 1.61" at 50 yds ave vel 953; CCI standard blue box 2.25 at 50 yds ave vel 903.
these are all 10 shot groups fired through a chrono. I settled on the Club for availability, reasonable accuracy and pricing and use CCI for practice.

Your results match the testing I did last summer. Eley Club shoots the best groups in my M41.

Re: Best Match Ammo for Model 41
If a gun likes match grade you are good to go as that's nearly all the shooter can find today. If you locate ammo that works get a couple yrs supply as the only hope is for a change in the market!

Re: Best Match Ammo for Model 41
After trying many in my 41 the best was yellow box RWS Rifle Match followed by CCI SV. The price difference wasn't worth the $10 + a box for RWS so I shoot CCI SV. Worst in mine was SK,Ely Black box and Wolf.
Just shows that every pistol is different. Try every ammo you can get and let your 41 be the judge.

Re: Best Match Ammo for Model 41
When I first got 41 earlier this year I tried about 5 different types of ammo and SK+ standard velocity was a bit more accurate than CCI SV but not enough to make a difference with my lack of talent off hand. My model 41 seems to shoot everything well without issue so as they say "your results may vary" Good luck. I would say for the 41 ammo that rarely has feeding issues is more important that a slight edge in accuracy.

Re: Best Match Ammo for Model 41
I had some Hansen Yugoslavian .22LR SV ammo years ago that was the best in my M41s, but that is no longer available. Bullets were really greasy, but they were accurate.
Next most accurate was Wolf subsonic. Slides just barely functioned, but they shot ~0.67" at 50 yards from a machine rest.
Next was Wolf Match target, which I still shoot.
.22s are really buggy about what ammo they like.
