Adding Lock to Old Pistol Box?
Anyone hear of these guys? Maker's mark is from just before the Zip(r) Code days.
Lack of locking latches is why this one never went to Camp Perry. Back before nutjobs wanted to be taken to Cuba.
I'm on my way to Home Depot to look at their cabinet latches, hoping to find something either to take a tiny padlock, or with one of those low-security built-in keys.
In the meantime, any recommendations? I just don't want to add a third latch in the form of an ugly padlock hasp or whatever they're called.

Is there a spot to put a mailbox lock on the lid?

Select file and nothing happens. Meh. Tries "hosting" a pic. Meh.
It's from the "Custom Gunshop" on Herning Avenue in Cranford, NJ.
The latches are by Excelsior

Re: Adding Lock to Old Pistol Box?
Mailbox lock like what they use on desk drawers? Not really.
The lid latches down like an old steel toolbox. Lid opens up from a rear hinge to a top container area. L-shaped pin then can be lifted up, to let down a vertical face that covers the rotate-out shelves.

It's more like the one here, at the post on Thu Mar 07, 2013 10:32 am
https://www.bullseyeforum.net/t1544-wtb-range-box
Edit:
Well, maybe not. That one opens differently, but the first pic looks similar to this one.
Think like a Kennedy toolbox with the top bucket, and drawers covered by a vertical face that tips down only after the lid is opened and a release pin is pulled up. Done looking for pics, this is apparently a rare design, despite being from Austin Behlert's shop.

Re: Adding Lock to Old Pistol Box?
you could still use the cam lock mounted to the bottom
I would file a slot in the locking tab (they come in various lengths) & have it catch on a screw in the lid CARR # 13105a71

Re: Adding Lock to Old Pistol Box?
In my local area, I have seen only one other person use a BE style pistol box. Might have to ask him.
Here's what the rest of the thing looks like. [img][/img]
Wobbley, I'm off to look at your link in a minnit.
Home Depot was no use. Even with ordinary padlock hasps, all they had was huge stuff and things for gates. Third or fourth goose-egg I've had with them in about six weeks.

Try http://www.precisionpistolbox.com/contactus.htm
He's a member of this forum and might have what you need.
Or this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gold-Guitar-Instrument-Case-Latch-latches-Set-of-3-for-Gibson-other-USA-Brands-/251540335184?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a90f8ea50
Search Ebay for Excelsior....there are many options.
I have excelsior latches with locks on my Pachmayr box, and I've driven to Camp Perry many times, but I can't say I've ever used the locks. Do you want to lock your box for air travel?

The "big box" stores are no good for specialty hardware like that. True Value, Hardware Hank, or Ace Hardware--and the older the store the better for small hasps or locks.

Did you really mean this:
http://www.rockler.com/locking-case-catch#product-tabs
Briefcase style, could work but I'm gonna look for something with a slightly higher security key.
Knowing what they are called helps a LOT.

Well, it was my Dad back when I was a pup. He flew once and took my Mom's box 'cause of the lock. Simpler days for sure.Rob Kovach wrote:Try http://www.precisionpistolbox.com/contactus.htm

I've been to Perry only for the Board rifle matches, once, and I flew too. Spent the night in Cleveland before taking a combination of public transport to Perry, last leg in a cab.
NOW, I just found this one from England, and it takes a lil' bitty padlock of my choice.
