Load suggestions for Remingtion 185 gr JSWC
I just got a handful of Remington 185 grain JSWC's from another shooter to try out. Any suggestions on a load for this bullet?
Thanks,
Doug

Before I spent much time working on loads, I would make sure that I could get more of the bullets.

I'd start with 3.8 to 4.2 of Bullseye.

OT but one of the bullets in the picture looks different, the column of 3 bullets on the right the one in the middle looks taller.

That one is different....check it on a scale. It might be a 200 grain....?

Thanks for the load suggestion, Wobbley.
I didn't notice that one different one earlier. These are from a friend who found them in his basement. He said they are probably 30 years old. I wouldn't be surprised if it just got mixed in by accident over the years.

Yep, looks like a Hornady FMJ C/T 200 grain.

My suggestion is to try for a velocity of 760 fps and tweak from there.

Best load I ever had out of my first wad gun was with these. 4.4 WST, TZZ match brass, .469.

I had great ransom results with 4.3 of bullseye or Vit310.

Quite a few years ago, Allen Fulford used 5.0 / 5.2 grains of Nitro 100 with the Rem. SWC
I tried this load, and used it for several years.. It produced some decent RR test targets.. It shot well, but had the recoil of the famed Marine Corp N310/Nosler.

In the early 90s a fellow shooter I knew gave me a box of loaded ammo with the 185 Remington you are looking for info on. 5.0 to 5.2 of 231 is what I seem to remember, research the data. They shot well at 50 yds but became hard to find.

Midway use to sell these in a 2000 bulk box, and seems I saw them advertised in the last year or so. might check there

4.5-4.6gr Bullseye, Winchester primer, 1.165 OAL, no crimp. Duplicates Federal match pretty closely.

no crimp????? how do you get it to feed? A 45 acp with no crimp will not even drop in a check gauge. that's a good load but taper crimp it to .468 if you want it to feed and function.

I have had great results with 4.0gr of BE using just those bullets. They are still listed as available.
BTW, used Federal cases, Win LP primers and a taper crimp. You are asking for trouble if you don't crimp. Ya gotta expand those cases if you want to seat a .452 diameter bullet.
Testing was done with a Clark 45 and a slide mounted Reddot. Can't get to a 50yd range.

Great bullets. I still have a loaded box I cherish for testing guns. Haven't seen any for sale in a long time.

crimp
I do run them into the taper crimp die, but just far enough to straighten the flare back out, not so far that it makes a crease in the bullet jacket. They come out at .471. I measured a round of Federal Gold Medal 230gr and a round of WCC white box match, and they were both .471. I don't know if any of them fit in a case gauge because I don't use one. When I load, it's for a specific gun, and I take the barrel from that gun and use it for my case gauge. If they don't work in your gun, crimp them to whatever you need. Sorry I didn't take time to explain what I meant by "no crimp."
