Altantic Arms 185 JHP load
Has anyone pulled one of these loads a part to see how many grains of powder there using in there 185 JHP. I'm not to interested on the powder type because it's probably blended and I'm not going to try to that.
Thanks Skid

At one time I read or was told that the Atlantic Arms ammo used Vihtavuori. Probably N310

I'm confused as to the value of an amount of powder without a type tied to it. It would seem more valuable to know the velocity of the round than the number of grains.

The AA 185 JHP that I have on hand is 5.3 grains. It is definitely not VV310.. I don't have time right now to open a bunch of powder cans to get a resemblance comparison.. Maybe later...

Re: Altantic Arms 185 JHP load
At Perry an AMU shooter (a great guy) gave me a partially full box of Atlanta Arms match ammo. I took it home to look it over. My notes say the bullet looked like Nosler 185 HP, OAL was 1.20" and the crimp was 0.471". I pulled a bullet and my notes say "WST?? so it kind of looked similar, but not identical - don't know what it is. Velocities were 772, 772, 770, 772 fps and the one I pulled, reassembled and crimped to 0.469" went 798 fps.
He gave it to me because he said "It's OK at 25, but won't shoot at 50". Go figure....

Re: Altantic Arms 185 JHP load
The powder was small, round grayish flakes and the mass was 3.8 grains. I was hesitant to give the load because I do not know what powder was used, so please don't duplicate this; use a loading manual, manufacturers recommendations and known powders; work it up per established safe procedures, etc. etc!
I have seen many reputedly good loads listed for the 185 Sierra JHP, some fast, some slow, but 775 fps might be a good starting point. I see that ASYM (on the box) lists their national match ammo at that velocity.

Re: Altantic Arms 185 JHP load
I pulled an Asym.. 4.2 and I would put money on VV310..The box states 775fps.
I have tried to match the AA load.. I can duplicate the flake size and configuration, but not the color.

can you guys post the lot numbers? There was obviously a big change between lots. It would be interesting to find out how often they change powders.

Not exactly an answer to your question, but related.
In the course of my day job I had the opportunity to speak to a primer chemist at Federal, and I asked what was the "factory load" for GM45B. He replied that there isn't one- they use bulk powders not available to handloaders, and load to a pressure vs time curve that they feel is optimal. Since we don't have the ability to measure pressure vs time we can't do what they do.
He also said bulk powders are not as consistent as canister powders (what handloaders use) and that drives their methodology.

Re: Altantic Arms 185 JHP load
That's interesting I've often thought that company's like Federal used bulk powders and that's probably why I had such a hard time matching powders but I've never heard of " loading to a pressure vs time curve" interesting.

With that weight, it could be BE-86.Jerry Keefer wrote:The AA 185 JHP that I have on hand is 5.3 grains. It is definitely not VV310.. I don't have time right now to open a bunch of powder cans to get a resemblance comparison.. Maybe later...

A number of yrs ago I came into posession of a number of Sierra 185 Match bullets. I called the tech line for reccomendations (50 yd) and the tech told me my cast bullets should be better or at least good enough. He also related the HP's are better than the match and that he cast his own for BE !?
