Smith & Wesson model 586 vs K38... Your choice and why?

Re: 586 vs K38
I have a 686 6" that is very good but I bought a 14-3 6" because they're slightly lighter. As it turns out the 14-3 is quite a bit better for me. It could be due to the amount of use it had before I got it. The ejector rod is very shiny.... The 14 seems to balance better, less muzzle heavy. I like leaving the 686 for just magnum loads now.

Re: 586 vs K38
I have both. I bought the 586 because it had the underlug. My 14-4 had been completely gone through by the custom shop, the trigger is a dream both in single action and double action - but I prefer the heavier 586.
To each their own.

I should add that I'd take a 27 over either but I haven't found any good deals on one yet.... There's something about the way the cylinder rotates/feels on a 27 that for me is perfect for sustained fire.

Go with a 14-6 or -7 and have the best of both choices. This -7 is not the prettiest but is the best on GB right now.

Or, this is the best price I have seen on a decent 27 for awhile.

14's, I have a -2 and a -7, I prefer the lighter cylinder, less mass to rotate, and a true .38 special.

I agree completely... Remember the Fred Schmidt Short Cylinder?? It was a craze in the early 80s.. I had several.. A couple of Fred's and several of my own.. I never found it a contributing factor to accuracy, but the reduction in cylinder rotating mass was easily apparent.james r chapman wrote:14's, I have a -2 and a -7, I prefer the lighter cylinder, less mass to rotate, and a true .38 special.

You guys got me motivated to dryfire with my model 28 tonight. I could shoot it single action in slow and timed. But it is just too big for me to get off 5 shots in rapid. I'm already looking for a model 14, but since I will shoot all of NRA week this year I wanted to try the revolver too.

Bisi, not really. Just clean the lead ring out of the cylinders once in awhile.

Re: 586 vs K38
I prefer the model 14 because of the lighter weight and better balance. I still carry a model 10 often as my concealed choice. As already stated, a true 38 will give an edge over a 357 for a variety of reasons. Over the years people who I helped learn to shoot almost always pick up the 38 and begin shooting them well as opposed to larger frame Smiths.

Re: 586 vs K38
I picked up a 14, a N frame gun (post war magnum), and a 686 to play with. Turns out I shoot my old 586 better than all of them. Obviously a boxers and briefs thing for me.

Can't say I'd turn down either one but I really like my 586. I'm ok with a little heavier gun. One of the reasons I like shooting a 1911 over ANY poly gun.
