Open, metallic, production....???
I understand what they are, but are they all considered unique? Would there be a classification card for every one? Specifically if I am an expert indoor, and shoot a few matches metallic can I expect another classification card in the mail for metallic or do the score all combine under either indoor or outdoor?

You should get a different card for each. Should being the key word. I shot 3 2700s last year metallic and I am still waiting for a card.

hmmmmm. Thats what I thought. I'm going to wait until I get my Indoor Expert card before I shoot metallic. They seem to be a bit behind.

Your match directors need to specify that you were shooting in the special class.
I haven't been seeing many match directors who have been specifying in their reports to NRA.
One of the things that I have been asking the NRA to do was to create Web based software for the match directors to make the process of administering a match easier.

The issue came up at our indoor 2700 last month. The ruling from the NRA as given to our match director (James Lenardson) was that if the match bulletin does not specify "Open Class Only" then they must submit your scores in the classification you shoot. You must shoot your entire match in the classification. So if you shoot metallic for .22 but use a dot for CF and/or .45 then you will be in your open classification. Dan Pauley is an indoor open High Master but is a Metallic Expert. He shot the entire match with iron sights so he was placed in the Expert class.

My concern is that I've shot 6 indoor matches since October all above 90% but I'm still classed as Sharpshooter indoors. I don't want a sub 90% match with metallic to screw me up. I really want to shoot this 52-2 and I can't bring myself to having a dot put on it:(

Orpheoet, A member here sold me a great mount for my 52. No drilling and with a 4 point mount it is very solid. I could not bring myself to drill my 52 either. It is a Leupold QI 52143. They are available Optics planet or Amazon. The QI stands for "Quick Install" and they really are.

The dot does not mount on the slide so all your loads still work. My choice however is a Magnus 514 bullet with 2.8 gr BE. I would probably use 2.7 but my Lee collet throws 2.8 so that is what it gets. If you look up that mount at Amazon you have to ignore the generic picture they show. That is the right mount number.

I only shoot outdoors - there's just no indoor event close to me - how does the classification effect placement in the end of the match. Winners? Do they place irons among irons and dots amongst dots? Does the classification have anything to do with placement of winners or is just title based and means little?

If a properly listed iron sight shooter beats the entire field including open and production, is he/she the "match winner"?

Yes. Anyone who wins the aggregate is the match winner.

Re: Open, metallic, production....???
So this classification thing is purely for describing a shooters ability with what kind of target arm? Has no effect to who the competitor shoots against or how the winners or placements are listed?

Re: Open, metallic, production....???
Let me give you an example Tim:
I am an outdoor High Master. If I go to a match with all iron sight guns, I would shoot the match like a new shooter. I would be a metallic unclassified master. If there were not enough people shooting metallic as a master I would then be placed with open class masters for scoring. I would continue to shoot as an unclassified metallic master until I shot enough matches to receive a classification card.

Re: Open, metallic, production....???
I wonder if it is my current classification that is causing the delay on getting a new classification card. I know both match directors sent in the correct match format and I shot metallic for the entire 2700's. Maybe Lifetime Master is throwing the system out of whack. I probably have to send them a letter requesting a lower classification. Or..they could just be very slow.

I know this is off topic;
But Len, every time I see one of your pic's with you holding a gun. I just have to chuckle
I have large hands but your hands are the size of my long departed fathers hands.
It makes every gun you hold look like a miniature
Just had to say it.

Re: Open, metallic, production....???
There is also the assigned classification. You can shoot as your current classification. For example an outdoor master, could shoot as an indoor master as an assigned classification, same for expert etc.
But to answer the question about reasons. If you win a match you are the match winner regardless of classification. But if you are an expert you compete against the experts. Aggregate winner can be anyone.
Or am I missing something?
