9mm bullseye loads

Is anybody using a 9mm for cf caliber for bullseye and if so what powder bullet combo are you using?

I use with good success Hornady 125gr HAP over Titegroup on the long line. Precision Delta 124gr JHP loaded the same for short line. Gun: CZ75B SP-01 with Burris Fastfire III RDS mounted on the slide.

How many grains of tite group are you using? Do you have any loads for lead?

No lead, jacketed only. Short COAL 1.069"-1.070" and very light load at 3.5gr TG ~ 1020-1030fps from 4.8" barrel

I checked with a couple Border Patrol PPC Master shooters using 9's.

Their using Hornady xtp, or hap 115 gr and Precision Delta 115 jhp over 5.1 gr Silhouette at 1.069 OAL in Springer1911's

Hornady 115 HAP 5.4 WSF 1.090 OAL  KC built 1911 1-32 KKM barrel.

Aren't the 125gr HAP .356? Unless you slugged your barrel and were sure you needed the oversize bullet you might want to stick with the 124gr (.355). The .356 is usually considered a 38 super bullet. Just my opinion YMMV.

125 HAP are .356" and shoot great in my CZ75 SP-01. CZ barrels are known for shorter troat, but come in .3555" groove ID. Many action shooters compete with CZs. Their favorite bullets are zero 121 or 125 gr JHP that also .356" and originaly made for .38 super. I have tested in my gun number of bullets 115 and 124-125 gr FMJ and JHP and those HDY 125 gr HAP have an edge at 50m.

0.356-0.357" jacketed have worked great in 9x19 since the first GIs came back with their war trophies.
Then, being a reloader, you start at the start load and wirk up, so, again, no issue.
If we ignore the past, we either relive it, reinvent it, or lose valuable knowledge.

I have a 952-2. The 125gr (.356) work so well in my 38 super(1911) that I gave them a try in the 952. No joy. They also did not perform well in my 9mm RO. They squirted all over the paper. There wasn't much uniformity in the older 9 mm's. The reloading manuals actually discuss that problem at some length. However, the newer products being made today are uniformly .355. Those old war trophies probably did do fine with larger bullets. I would suggest slugging the barrel if you are not sure which bullet you should be using. Me, I am sticking with .355 jacketed and .356 lead for my target loads. That old P-08 in the safe I don't plan on shooting anyhow. YMMV

When I said "squirt" the bullet would still hold the 10 ring at 25 yds. It just would not hold the X ring.

In answer to the original OP. I use 6.4 gr of Power Pistol behind a 115gr XTP or HAP bullet. I also use 5.1 gr Behind a 147gr XTP or RNBT bullet. I have tried a lot of different lead bullets but was never able to come up with a good load for the long line.

My club only had 25 yard range indoors and lead bullets only. Was considering a9 mm range officer. How does yours shoot?

Jake, The best lead loads in my RO were with the Magnus 130gr sized down to .356 and the Magnus 147gr FP. I think if you can only shoot 25yds you should be able to develop some nice working loads. I have some pictures here somewhere I will post.

Is your ro stock or have you did any upgrades to it?

Before these were taken I had a trigger job by Roddy Toyota, New NM bushing and a new (.201) slide stop pin. Since the pictures were taken I sorta played with it and fitted a 38 super barrel to it. I can change it back to a 9 just by swapping out barrel, bushing and recoil spring. I play a lot.

I was considering converting it to the super. Do you see better accuracy with the super? And if so what loads do you use? What brand is your super barrel?

Jake1911, I have not made it to the range to test group size since I fit the Briley bushing to this pistol. I would have to say that there was very little improvement going from the 9 to the 38 super at this time. The "best" load for this barrel is the 125gr (.356) Magnus or Zero jacketed bullet with 4.6 gr BE. The best lead loads are with the same 130gr and 147 gr Magnus that work best with the 9. I also have some super loads that I have loaded "very" hot. The pistol now makes a very kick butt carry. I have no idea who made the barrel. I had been watching E-bay for a long time waiting for a Nowlin ramped barrel to pop up. A Storm Lake 6" showed up and I was going to put it in the RO but it fit my 40 cal Kimber so much better I put it there instead. Then another barrel showed up and was priced right so I had to grab it. There are no markings on this barrel. It dropped in and fit great. Someone here might be able to tell who made it by the picture.

Len, no offense; did you use optics for those nice groups?  I especially like the double group made by the Magnus leg.  Any inkling of what changed the placement?

  None taken. I don't have optics on the 9mm RO (now a 38 super). The group change probably happened when I changed magazines. The Lee pistol rest is a mechanical rest that requires practice to use. I have fun with it but I would probably be classified as newbie. They are easier to use if the pistol does have optics however because you can verify your return to the aimpoint with a glance. I lift the pistol off the rest after 5 rounds to change magazine. You try to use the same grip and forward pressure when you take your next 5 shots and that is where lots of practice comes into play and where you have the most potential for a group change.

Len, can you post a pic of your magazine adapter for a 1911? obviously not the original idea!!!

I wanted a mount that I could still use the magazine and I also wanted to be able to use it without taking both grips off the 1911. Since I would not be able to use the rest if the right side grips were left on (Herretts) then I decided I wanted the adapter to work on the right side. I didn't want to make 2 if one would work so I also adapted it to fit my 952.

gotcha, I couldn't tell by the pic, but, the original was essentially useless from everything I tried. I made one similar, but on the left side.

James check out this adapter. It would work with most of the new tactical pistols that are allowed for EIC now. I just put it together today. I wanted something to test the groups in the XDM if it ever gets here.
