Open sights on 22 Black or other? Empty Open sights on 22 Black or other?

Post by DavidR Mon Sep 12, 2016 6:40 pm

Ok so I'm setting up my Marvel for DR 22, do most shoot the iron sights like a ball gun all black? This works if holding 6 o'clock on a 45 but as flat as a 22 shoots wouldn't it be better to shoot center mass? And if so the black sights don't show up, so is anyone painting the front sight or other options to get a good sight picture?

There's black and then there's REALLY BLACK!!
Before I tried a different color I'd try smoking the sights first.

My old eyes like the fiber optic sights for 22 EIC. And they are legal.

Black sights, sub-six hold, no sight adjustment between 50 and 25.

The best lighting in the whole world for open sights, and you put sight black on.

I bet you put A-1 on filet mignon, ya dang reprobate.

Some very good shooters have used center hold for iron sights. McMillan was one IIRC. It is really personal preference and depends upon a couple of things. If you have good eyesight and the lighting on the range where you are shooting lets you see the front sight clearly, you may like center hold. I always thought an advantage of center hold was that one tended less to frame the shot (thus trying to pick it off) than when using a 6 o'clock hold.

I also believe that that there is less tendency to "pick the shot" with a center of mass hold.  Also a center hold tends to force you to look at the front sight.

I tried shooting center hold once and my black sights washed out in the black target.

Put a scratch on the front sight and some white paint below the front sight. This reflects the light onto it in places other than Perry. And works ok at Perry too. I saw Zins ballgun setup with white paint below the front sight and then used label material on mine.

It didn't make me shoot like Zins. But it did help my eyes to focus on the front sight better.
