Reload equivalents
Can someone supply me with recipes for reloads approximating Federal 185gr SWC match loads.

Re: Reload equivalents
well if you are going to do a bit load experimentation then 4.2 - 4.5 of either BE or V310.
think you'll find 4.2 works very well with either

Re: Reload equivalents
Here are some loads I've seen posted over the years to duplicate Federal 185gr JSWC Match ammo. I have no direct experience with any of them. I use 4.4gr VV N310 with 185 JSWC or JHP which I think is a little hotter than Federal Match from 10-12 years ago, but I've never chrono'd Federal.
Those that specify a velocity call out 790-800 fps.
Those that specify a bullet all call out the Remington 185gr JSWC.
4.4-4.6 Bullseye, OAL 1.155"
4.2-4.3 Clays
4.3-4.6 Solo 1000
4.6-4.7 Titegroup
4.25 VV N310, New Starline, OAL 1.165", crimp 0.469", WLP
3.9-4.1 VV N310
4.3 WST

Re: Reload equivalents
Thanks everybody, that'll get me close enough I think. I want this load to help break in my new Les Baer wad gun.

Re: Reload equivalents
I did a lot of research years ago, called and talked to federal and even made it to a old guy that had been with them for years and he told me I couldn't buy the powder because what was used in the match was a special blend of powders. He wouldn't say of what either.

Re: Reload equivalents
You might need a little higher charge weight for breaking in a newly built gun. Les Baer's are particularly known to be tight.

+1, I needed to shoot 230gr ammo in 2 of my 4 Les Baer's to get them to cycle. With one of them I shot the recommended 500 break in rounds at one sitting, even though I took breaks to let things cool down (both me and the gun) I felt like hell the next day.
Why you need 500 rounds is beyond me, now I'd just use some bore paste on the slide and after several passes be done with it.

Re: Reload equivalents
well since BEA works at ATK Alliant Powder I am going to go with what he says regarding Alliant powders.DavidR wrote:I did a lot of research years ago, called and talked to federal and even made it to a old guy that had been with them for years and he told me I couldn't buy the powder because what was used in the match was a special blend of powders. Re: Reload equivalents
Thanks Steve, I loaded 4.3gr, 4.6gr, and 4.9gr charges of Bullseye with a Zero 185 JHP on top, and OAL 1.160". My Les Baer wadcutter hiccupped one time in 20 with the 4.3gr load, and ran perfect with the 4.6gr, and 4.9 gr loads with the Zero 185gr JHP's. I believe the 4.6gr load was the most accurate, it is what I will use in my next match.SteveT wrote:Here are some loads I've seen posted over the years to duplicate Federal 185gr JSWC Match ammo.
