Substituting Bullseye with Ramshot (Accurate Arms) Powders for competition loads with 45, 38 and 9mm
Was wondering if any of you out there had loaded with AA powders instead of the traditional Bullseye or VV loads for 200 gn cast SWC bullets? A friend provided me with a bunch of AA powders and so far they have proven pretty good. I started with AA#5 and found it very accurate but with more recoil than the classic 3.9 gn Bullseye load which is much softer shooting.
I also tried some AA#2 with the 200 gn cast SWC bullet and it worked very well. Softer shooting and very accurate.
I was thinking about trying Solo 1000 with the same bullet. Has anyone had much experience with this powder for 45 ACP loads (or any other bullets?)
I also like shooting .38 wadcutters out of a Smith Model 19, a Colt Officers Match and a Smith 52-2. In the past I used 231 for all of those models with great accuracy. I was reading that ZIP has more or less the same characteristics as 231. Has anyone used it with success?
Finally, I was curious about loading an 1911 chambered in 9mm with cast or jacketed bullets over AA powders?
Thanks much!

9mm - I use WSF, no exact match in AA, but AA-7 is a match for VV340 and quite a few use 340 for 9mm.

My Les Baer shoots less than 1 1/2" with 8.5gr AA#5 and Nosler 185 JHP. I've never tried #5 with lead though.

I know a few shooters who used Solo 1000 for .45 ACP target loads. The most notable was Dr. Darius Young. It must be a pretty good powder for .45 ACP, if he used it.Ropate wrote:Was wondering if any of you out there had loaded with AA powders instead of the traditional Bullseye or VV loads for 200 gn cast SWC bullets? I have no experience with AA powders but have the following loads in my recipe list which came from various sources on this forum, the email list and the earlier incarnations of the bullseye list.
45ACP: These loads seem turned around. I normally expect jacketed loads to be hotter than lead.
4.2gr AA #2 w/ 185 JHP
4.5gr AA #2 w/ 200 LSWC
38SPL
2.9-3.1gr AA #2 w/ 148
3.4gr AA #5 w/ 148
3.5gr AA #2 w/ 158
