Lee 200 gr vs 185 gr .45 ACP
Newbie here. I recently got interested in BE again after a 20 year hiatus. I've been shooting Cowboy Action and Wildbunch. My long guns and CAS guns are .45 Colt. Trained many years ago in the KISS method, I decided to cast a 230 grn truncated cone bullet because it worked in everything and I didn't have to worry about OAL in the rifles (OAL can be a problem with the lever guns). Now that I'm getting back into BE, I am going to have a .45 built on a Range Officer. Its about time to start casting and reloading for the winter. Wondering your thoughts between the 200 gr and 185 gr Lee semi wadcutter bullets. I'd like to use the same bullet in all my guns if I can to simplify things. I size everything to .452. Thinking the 200 gr might be a little easier to work with in the lever guns. What say you?

Never messed with CAS. However, I'd start with the 200SWC and see. Then try the 185s if recoil is problematic.

I've seen the Lee 200 gr alox bullet shoot 7/8" 50 yd groups before. I've had great results with them when a friend used to cast them for me.

I've casted and shot several thousand Lee 200gr SWC, great performance with 4gr WST.

I just remembered that you'll need to initially measure all your cast bullets from the Lee mould
Sometimes one of the cavities will be different size than the rest. Their QA needs a little help sometimes.

Is putting the bullets through a sizing die enough to correct for this?Jon Eulette wrote:I just remembered that you'll need to initially measure all your cast bullets from the Lee mould

My experience with the Lee 6-cavity molds is that sometimes, some cavities run small, or large, sometimes very large. A size die won't help if they're small. I have one .40 mold where all the cavities are so large it takes a heck of a lot of force to get bullets through the sizer.
