Best pistol sights?
So, I like my SW22 pistol. But I really don't like the sights.
If I was to get a red dot, I'll really like to get the mount made by madd macs precision tactical. http://www.maddmacsprecisiontactical.com/burris-fastfire-iii.html
But like the fibre optic sights, not legal under ISSF and club rules. I need iron sights.
Volquartsen makes a nice replacement SW22 Picatinny Rail <
So I thought of having that or a base similar to Madd Macs machined to accept adjustable rear sights from some other pistol or revolver.
That would leave me with the question of how to replace the front sights.
In the meantime, I'm thinking pieces of opaque black or white filament to replace the fiber optics in the OEM sights.

For bullseye my opinion is tube style scopes are better and do not overspend. Take your savings and get a trigger job.

Except for club competition and ISSF style competition I need good iron sights.rich.tullo wrote:For bullseye my opinion is tube style scopes are better and do not overspend. Take your savings and get a trigger job.
The included plastic rail or aftermarket rail could mount a tube style sight. But I'll still need a good set of adjustable iron sights.

Except I'm trying to see about mount iron sights from another pistol on my SW22.flphotog wrote:There are no best sights, the best is simply what works best for you.
Having a mount machined to accept the Ruger Mk rear target sight or the standard S&W revolver sights for example. The revolver sights require a slot and two screw holes. The Ruger Mk and so many others a dovetail.
So my question might better be phrased as: "Which pistol has the largest variety, best availability, best quality of aftermarket sights?"

Maybe you could use black paint to hide the fibre optic pipes. Or the black filament you talk about. That should make it legal for ISSF.
When I see you talk about buying aftermarket sights and getting the gun fitted for them, I think you'd be better off buying a (used?) Ruger or Buckmark with proper iron sights instead.

I do not really like iron sights, but my favorite are the ones on my 208. I would assume the right Smith could find and instal them.

Yes, I'll be looking into replacing the fibres first. White for when that's allowed (as the illuminated ones are useless with the range lighting) and black when it's not.
I bought the pistol knowing the ISSF/club/sights issue. I based the purchase on what felt right in my hand. And as my first firearm, I wanted something that was new, and mine.
Simply, I have the gun I bought. If I had a Ruger I'd be buying all the upgrades for that. And for any used pistol, even if it has black target sights, there's always sights with more adjust-ability or other eatures to be found.
Looking at the aftermarket for sights for all firearms, something aftermarket will undoubted become available in time. The way the sight or picatinny rail fit on the SW22 fitting any type of rear sight is as simple as a mount. If you look at Madd Macs Precision Tactical, they already have a custom mount for the Burris FastFire.

If you mount the rear sight, regardless of variety to a rail, you will need to raise the front sight as well or have a lot if adjustability in the rear.
Is you could get a full length rail, you could mount both front and rear sights on it and setup a separate rail with a dot, if you like. Doing that I would look for aBomar style Kemsight and a dovetail front. Depending on your age you may want to have the rear notch opened up by 10-20 thousandths.

I realise about the issue of front sight height. Height might not be such an issue. The OEM adjustable rear sight is mounted on a removable rail. The OEM plastic picatinny rail has a built in fixed sight that uses the factory front sight (see picture below).jmdavis wrote:If you mount the rear sight, regardless of variety to a rail, you will need to raise the front sight as well or have a lot if adjustability in the rear.

What pointers can you give about opening the rear notch or not?

If you can't get a good sight picture you may need to open the notch of whatever sight. Look up a Nygords Notes online and read what he has to see. As I've gotten older I've need stronger sight lights, wider rear sights or both.
I also like a flat or undercut blade on the front. For Bullseye we can put white paint on the barrel or rib beneath the sight and that helps indoors and out.
