My Luck Is Terrible!!
I just received my Ultra Match Grade 1911 barrel today for the R1.
When I initially inspected the barrel, I noticed there were a bunch of metal flakes left in the barrel. I said to myself wtf
I decided to run an oil soaked patch down the bore to clean everything out. Well, after a few patches, this is what was left in the Ultra Match Grade barrel...
When I run a Qtip down the barrel, it feels like I am sliding it across sand paper
On a final and brighter note, I must say the fit of the barrel was absolutely perfect with zero slop when locked up!
Anyhoot, I think I am going to keep the barrel I currently have in the R1 and call it good..
Cheers,
Shawn

What barrel is that and where did you get it if I may ask. I like my R1 and am going to use the frame for my Nelson conversion kit when it gets here. I was thinking it could use some trigger work for BE. Don

I sure hate to mention the name of who manufactured the barrel but I will say it is not a Kart, Barsto, Storm Lake, or one of the major pistol manufacturers barrels.Magload wrote:What barrel is that and where did you get it if I may ask. The barrel was for my R1 to experiment with a match grade barrel and accuracy improvements that should follow with a match barrel combined with reloading.

I've seen rough bored barrels shoot good. Not pretty to look at but if lands are good they can still group.

I am sure you are correct that some of them can still shoot good. However, I paid good money for a match grade barrel not a sewer pipe. Besides, the sewer pipe barrel would always be in the back of my mind bugging me

If you're going to trash can it, send it to me. I'll see if it shoots! Good R&D barrel ;l)

I think a refund would be a better course of action

John, might a couple of hundred rounds of JHP and some JB, get that barrel in shape?

Quite possibly. I've welded up old Colts that had extra grooves (not really that bad) in thegrooves and got 1.5" with Federal match. It would smooth up eventually. I know Jerry believes in nice smooth barrels (so do I) but in my experience if tolerances are good they will still shoot good. 45 acp is pretty darn forgiving.

What would you gents recommend I do with this barrel? Swap it out? I don't know enough about brand new 1911 barrels to make the call without input from the experts.
Thanks,
Shawn

The barrel was cut rifled. Perhaps by a broach. It can and probably shoot ok. The chamber and throat looks like it could use a touch up too.

This isn't right. I would worry about an overabundance of leading or copper fouling. I would contact the barrel maker to see about having them fix or replace the barrel. When you buy a new car, would you expect the paint to be acceptable if it were wrinkled?

It looks like my S&W 986 barrel that had burrs from the forcing cone dragged through the bore during, most probably, the first few rounds fired. After 6 months of arguing, 4 returns to S&W, 2 S&W claims the barrel was replaced, the barrel was finally changed after a letter of complaint to the CEO. The new barrel reduced group size by 30%. I feel your pain.

Maybe it wasn't finished. QC misses a few every where.

Re: My Luck Is Terrible!!
A brief Google search uncovered several barrel manufacturers using that sort of tag. I may check the trademark data base, but the term seems much too generic - to the point of having little meaning. Mac
Checked: not in trademark data. Most close is an old Federal registration for ammo.

Re: My Luck Is Terrible!!
Edit: Rather than get a refund, I am going to give the manufacturer a chance to make things correct. They admitted that the barrel was not right and slipped past the QC process: they are sending another one out. Hopefully, things will work out with round two especially since the barrel was turning out to be a really great fit with very little smithing required.
The barrel is in the mail heading back for a refund.
Thanks,
Shawn
