New gun recoil spring question
I have bought a second hand 1911 that appears to have been set up as a wad gun. Should I buy some recoil springs of known weight so I know what's what's?

Springs are cheap.....
why take a chance with an "old" unknown one? You may need something different regardless depending on the load you decide to use. Buy two.

Re: New gun recoil spring question
Recoil spring need changed @ every 2K rds on guns that shoot full power loads...I would imagine you could get alittle more mileage out of a target set up...But yes you probably should pick up some springs ....I would get #10-#14 lbs spring ,this way as you work with loads to see what your gun likes you can change the spring to get good function...everybodys spring rate is alittle different ...when I shot 3.8 BE with a 200gr head my gun is happy at a 12lb rate ...If I shoot 3.6 Clays it seems to like a 11 but your gun will be different....so if you have 10-14 youve got most loads you will try covered....I as well use shock buffs some may advise against this as it has been said they fall apart in the gun with use ....Ive never had one fail as I change them every 2k or there abouts ..I dont use them in my carry gun but my IDPA ans BE guns have them in it...cheap protection ...No there not nessesary but they work for me.....I left one in my IDPA gun for 3krds useing 200gr bullets at 900fps and it showed no sign of failure

Buy a Wolf pack of springs and be done with it. Throw the old spring away as it is an unknown.

Re: New gun recoil spring question
You could buy one (or a couple) of the Wolf calibration packs:

for bullseye loads, using a 185 or 200 lswc and between 3.8-4.0 of bullseye, clays powders a 10 or 11 lb will do the trick.
