Distinguished loads - Mysterious additional spring with my Wolf order Empty Mysterious additional spring with my Wolf order

I see a firing pin spring included in the package with my reduced rate recoil spring. What's going on? There's no mention in the literature whether it is heavier, lighter, or why I got it. it just reads "also included is a firning pin spring."

Also, since I am just now pulling together my gun barrery and working heavily on practicing fundamentals, where do folks find reloading information on reduced loads that match specific weights (rates) of recoil springs? Obviously I can just start very low and develop this myself. I just thought to ask if there is a database somewhere that gives some general guidelines for comon loads, matched to specific rates of reduced power springs.

Thanks folks,

You won't find a load chart cross referencing spring rates. If you look through the history on this sight you'll probably find a good starting point. If not just post your gun's configuration and you'll get good advice.

I use Wolff recoil and firing pin springs in several guns without any issues. Good luck!

Distinguished loads - Mysterious additional spring with my Wolf order Empty Target Loads

Post your gun specs and type of target shooting. A number of members will be along shortly to make recommendations. For example, I shoot bullseye and my 1911 has a 10# spring and I shoot 200 gr LSWC over 3.7 gr N310 powder. Makes for clean shooting with light recoil.

Thanks guys,

I have an unmodified series seventy which will now have a 12 pound recoil spring installed; no other modifications right now. I stock Bullseye and Unique and will be picking up one of the popular 185 grain molds from either Lyman or RCBS. In addition I have a decent supply of jacketed 185's so load recommendations for both lead and jacketed in this weight would be greatly appreciated.

What's the other spring for?

Assuming the jacketed 185's are TMJ, the Speer starting load for BE is 4.5 gr with OAL=1.275". Max load for BE is 4.9 gr. For Unique the starting load is 5.0 gr and max load is 5.8 gr.

BE starting load should give you about 770 fps and the Unique about 670.

I don't have any loads for 185 gr LSWC.

3.8BE under 185gr hplswc is a good load.

Your other spring is the firing pin spring. I would replace it when you do the recoil spring.

Are you going to shoot open sights, frame-mounted red dot or slide-mounted red dot? You'll want to shoot Bullseye, Unique is too slow and doesn't handle the light charges well.

as far as your loads go...

Open sighted I shot a 200gr Lswc with 3.8 BE and a 14lb spring . Your Lead 185's try 3.8-4.1 BE

Most generally 185/200 lswc's 3.5-4.0 of Bullseye- lean more toward the upper end with 185's

Clays powder 3.6-3.9 should get the job done

recoil spring if you have springs from 10-16 just keep dropping till you get 100% function and ejection ..most reccomend you empty case should go about 3-6 ft on ejection ...I'm happy with mine going 2-4 ft

If you mounted a red dot on the slide you may find you need a tenth or 2 more powder and a spring in the 10-13 range ..but all guns are different so you just have to play with it ......I shoot a slide mounted dot with a 200gr LSWC , I can use 3.5 BE and a 11lb spring or If I shoot outdoors I use 3.8 BE same bullet and a 12lb spring....185's I load @ 4.0 BE and use a 12lb spring...But my gun like 200's better accuracy and function wise so I didnt play with 185's alot. hope this helps....I'm pretty new at this myself and this is what Ive found that works ...But again all guns differ....so load in small batches and play with it till you find aload that the gun like for accuracy and function .....

That extra spring is for your firing pin. Use it, it is heavier than standard and is used to prevent things like firing pin bounce. Slam fires suck!
