Just how far will you go?
I am curious, how far (or long) are you willing to drive to a 2700 match?
Living in Central New York, matches have become quite scarce and a bit far to travel.
The minimum drive time I have is currently 2 hours with the worst time of 3.5-4 hours (not counting Camp Perry, which is roughly 6 hours).
What say you?

I drive 1.5 hours to nearest range to shoot 2700's then the next closest range is 3 hours everything after that is 5 plus hours so I'm in the same boat. But I love it.

2-3 hour drive one way is the max for me if I have to work the next day.
If I were retired and had the funds, would be driving around the country.

Re: Just how far will you go?
In our winter indoor matches (1800) there aren't any close so we go about 3 hours either North or South 2 times a month, sometimes in snow or ice storms. I've only put the truck in the ditch once, during an rain/ice storm, and we weren't even late!
In the summer we attend several local (<1hr away) matches and travel to 2-3 matches that are 3hrs, one that is 5hrs (Beloit, WI State) and one that is 8hrs (Bristol, IN Regional) we don't do Bristol every year.
Then there is Canton/Perry 12-13hrs - but not every year.

Re: Just how far will you go?
I have routinely driven just over 2 hours. I would consider going 3 without an overnight stay but have found 2.5 and under gives me plenty of opportunity. I live in the southwest Chicago suburbs and can find matches out to Milan (Quad Cities) west and Bristol Indiana east, Beloit and Menominee WI to the north and 2 ranges within an hour in the Northern Illinois.

Re: Just how far will you go?
Several times a year I will get up at 3:30 am hit the road to go to a match that starts at 9:00. Many times I can catch a ride halfway there and sleep the rest of the way. If you are going to compete you must be mindful of your activities the day before. Eating right, resting, and getting to bed early. Stretching is a must before any match but even more important when you've been in a car for over four hours. I make sure I have a full water bottle with me so I can hold it in the air in the car when we are about 20 minutes away from the range.

Re: Just how far will you go?
On two occasions last summer I drove 9 hours to a 2700. The seven hour drive to another one seemed like nothing. Those are the closest matches to me, except the one I run. Kind of hard to shoot your best when the kinks in your back are not sorted out yet but that's better than shooting just once a month with the same three guys as last month. Bullseye and across the course rifle matches are dead in some parts of the country.

I'm very lucky. I live about an hour away from 4 matches INCLUDING Perry. I am going to try venturing out a little farther though...

I'm too lazy to drive 2 hours to Sacramento, but I'm driving for 3 days from SF to Camp Perry.

I think you did because Menoninee is in between Eua Clair Wi and Minneapolis Mn.
Either that or you drive real fast because it takes me 4 hours to get to the Dells area from where you are and Menominee is about an hour past that.

Re: Just how far will you go?
Id really like to max out at a hour to hour and a half... I would push too two if the match was right.. Sadly not much around me in NY. I have one place near by, but they only do 2-3 a year... I haven't found others yet.

now that's commitment. I went to Perry from the west coast 4 times.javaduke wrote:I'm too lazy to drive 2 hours to Sacramento, but I'm driving for 3 days from SF to Camp Perry.
Hearing a guy brag about how he drives from western PA. to Perry some how doesn't seem to be such a big deal to me.

Re: Just how far will you go?
It's the Menominee Falls club that is located near Sussex, WI. Sussex is a western or northwestern suburb of Milwaukee. It's about 3 hrs or so from my house (60 miles west of Chicago). They run a couple of 1800 each year along with leg matches between the two relays. The 1800 format works well for me because I can sleep in and shoot the second relay. Very nice group up there and they provide lunch.Doug Tiedt wrote:Menomonee Falls, WIVirgil Kane wrote:weber1b wrote:I probably misspelled it but in the Milwaukee areaJKR wrote:Menominee Wi ??

Ahh I get it, forgetting to put in "Falls" after Menoninee is a 300 mile difference.
