Distinguished loads - Chronographing Loads Empty Chronographing Loads

Post by Jon Eulette Thu Aug 10, 2017 7:37 am

Chrono'd some CCI SV & Aguila SV last night. Used a friends Labradar. Cool device.
CCI for 5 shots was 998, 998, 997, 999, 998 fps from 6" Marvel conversion barrel.
Aguila for 5 shots was 999, 1040, 1020, 1015, 1005 fps same pistol.

Shot some handloads through a 5" Clark .38 spl and 6" Clark longslide .38 spl. Difference in barrel length was 30 fps. Found out my handloads are really way to HOT. Load 1 was 2.8 gr BE with 150 gr cast solid 850's fps. Load 2 was 2.9 gr WST with Magnus 148 hbwc 850's fps as well. Gonna reduce charges to get into low 700's. Clark uses Douglass barrels (back in the day) that are typically 0.355 bore. Not sure if tighter bore contributes to higher velocities. Excellent accuracy even at these velocities.

Just thought I'd share.

.38 velocities don't sound right. Distance to screens??

Run some match factory ammo to compare.

Labradar is cool,  Looks like the 1050 CCI and 1130 Aguila are from rifle barrels. Thanks for doing this Jon.

No screens on a LabRadar (jglenn21 beat me to it)
+1 on running factory ammo through gun to compare, but I've never had bad readings from my LabRadar.

I tested my 160 long line .45 loads this past sunday. The results were 840 fps average. Thirty fps between max and min and a good  standard deviation.

The better part was a 193-9x at 50 yards.

The Labradar makes such testing much easier. I should run some of the Federal Gold Metal Match 185's I have to check those velocities.

Oh, I'm sorry! I thought you were using an old Hollywood chrono with paper screens.
No, I meant at what distance does it read at.

Shoot right next to it. Amazing contraption. The Clark 5" with 148 Magnus and 2.7gr WST was 750's.

The LabRadar gives you a continuous readout starting from the barrel.  You set 5 distances you want to have displayed on it's monitor.  I've shot through the screens of my CED while using the LabRadar and the difference is minor.  It gives you all the same info any chrono does.

It sets up on the bench next to you so besides not having to set anything up down range, the really cool thing is it captures raw data every 0.002 of a second and stores it in a TRK file.  I've tracked a 45acp round out to our berm, about 120 yards, pretty interesting.

It does loose track of 22lr and 223 rounds beyond 60-70 yards, but I've tracked 9mm to 120 yards.

Hodgdon lists 735fps  for the max load of 2.8gr of WST. I bet that's measured with a revolver, where some pressure is lost in the gap. Jon's velocities are higher, maybe because a semi pistol doesn't have a gap for the gasses to escape?

Just a thought on the velocity for the 38 special loads, are you sure they are really 2.8 grains of bulleye, maybe your powder scale needs to be re-calibrated.  I don't mean the question to sound insulting, just sometimes things like that slip through the cracks.  That being said the lab radar tool sounds really nice and thanks for sharing the info about the velocity of the 22 ammo.

I've used weights to check my powder scale. My Star press throws very accurate charge. Am using 6" barrel which avg 30 fps faster than 5" barrel.
Will test again in near future.

I chrono'd some CCI SV and Aguila SV in a Ruger MK II with target barrel a few years back. My results were very much like Jon's, except about 20 fps slower. The CCI was slower than the Aguila, but the Aguila grouped better at 25 yards. The Aguila grouped under a half inch and the CCI grouped slightly over a half inch.

The LabRadar  will read and record at five different distances up to 100 yards. Pretty cool.

I just wanted to compare velocities at similar distance to other chronos that measure at 10' or so.

I think comparison to factory is the best baseline.

Actually the labradar will record at far more than 5 distances. The summary screen lets you set 5 distances, but when you look at the file you basically get a velocity for every yard that the bullet is in the radar path to 100 or more for the 45. Less for the .22 or .223. In one test I was getting out to 120 yards with .308. To get that data, insert an SD card and get an SD reader for your PC.

The value of the information is another question, but it does record more than 5 distances.

I am loading some 38 spl loads today, starting with 2.65 grains of B/E with 148 Gr HBWCs. Ill test velocities later today or tomorrow with the Labradar in a 5" Clark. I'll also test some factory Winchester Super X Special Match wadcutters as a comparo.

I have always loved gadgets.  Working in a Navy Cal Lab for 12 years I learned to enjoy using test equipment.  I think I enjoy testing guns and loads more then I do just shooting them.  The Labradar was a must have when it hit the market.  The max distance that which it will record bullet speed depends on the cross section of the bullet and the radar and needs a return.  Don

Was the Aguila ammo used in the tests the newer ammo, or the older ammo with Eley priming?

I can tell Jon is not going overboard with testing here but it seems like too many rifle shooters go from OCW into OCD testing with these tools. Accuracy is not an inverse function of low ES, that would be too easy.

Besides a person still has to align those sights and squeeze that trigger. The great equalizer.

Just Chrono'ed some 38 spl.  Reloads with 2.6 gr B/E, Magnus 148 HBWC, Clark 38 w/ 5" barrel, average 730, (71- to 750) fps.  I also shot 5 shots of Factory Win  Super X Special Match. Average 741 (733-746), a little less spread than my reloads.  I am going to increase my reloads to 2.7 and try again.
