My New Box
I started this sport with an old Pachmayr box and it worked fine because I only had iron sighted guns at the time. When I got dot sighted guns I needed a taller box. I bought a used Gun-Ho box. It was nice but it was a huge five gun box and when filled up it was heavy. So I got out of that and into a three gun strong case box. It was the extra wide 2008 model. I again was not totally satisfied. The drawer came flying open sometimes when I opened the lid, and the scope mount was the first genreration model so that was a bit odd to use. I didn’t like it mostly because of how wide it was. So I sold it.
I wanted a pachmayr case that was tall enough for dot sighted guns. They can be modified by lowering the drawer but this old pachmayr of mine was my grandfathers and I wasn’t about to cut into it. I found Greg at Precision Pistol Boxes and he is a member here. He builds pistol boxes that are very much like the old pachmayr boxes but with some differences.
At first glance the outside of the box is coated in Linex. It’s the stuff truck beds are sprayed with to keep em from getting all beat up. It’s a very tough exterior and from what I can tell it’ll take a lot of abuse before allowing any damage to the wood of the box.
The carrying handle is the luggage type. Depending on what box you order you could get a brief case type handle. I opted for the Deluxe Four Gun Pistol Box. It has a nicely recessed luggage type handle. It’s recessed like the pachmayr boxes are. And the handle it self is a very nice quality, wide, softer rubber type handle and strong enough to carry much much more than the loaded box. I play guitar and I’ve noticed the handle is much like a good handle on an electric guitar amp, or amp head which can be plenty heavy.
The latch is again like the pachmayr boxes. One single latch but a quality and lockable latch. Two keys were included.
When I opened up the box I liked how the inside was clear coated. It allows for easy seeing of what’s inside. All the boxes I’ve had until now were dark inside. Greg can make a box all black inside but I was encouraged to go with the clear coat inside option. I’m glad I did. I can see easily into the box to find what ever it is I'm looking for.
The fingers holding the guns are felt lined like the pachmayr boxes but instead of being straight and open at the top they are scooped and keep the gun from rising up. The knob that tightens the guns in is large and easy to use. My hands aren't crammed reaching for it to turn it. Felt lined bottom and felt lined tray but they are not glued down. You can opt to leave em in there or remove them. I put them in there. And with them not glued down, if they get beat up they are easily replaceable. And if you want you can glue em down or ask Greg to. But best I think to leave it like it comes.
The box I ordered came with a magazine magnet and it simply does it’s job. The scope mount is a “Jones” mount. It’s similar in use to the Gil Hebard scope mount but it appears stronger in design. My box could've come with a carrying strap and mounts for it but I asked to leave them off. I didn't need the strap. Not a fan of one.
In all I’m impressed with the box and it’s quality. It’s a very solid box. Has plenty of room for what ever it is that you carry. The nice thing about Greg and his boxes is that he’ll build you what ever kind of box you need. He’s a shooter so he knows what you mean when you talk to him about your box needs. I am very pleased with the box and if I need another one I wouldn’t hesitate to go to Greg for another.

Re: My New Box
After looking around quite a bit, and reading what's been posted in this forum, I've decided I'm buying a box from Greg. I'm waiting until I get home, so I can measure the trunk of my tiny Mazda MX-5, so the box and trunk lid don't fight each other.
No compromises. All of Greg's boxes look excellent.

Re: My New Box
So,
I just visited this guys sight, There is nothing available ?
All I really want is a couple of "Jones" adjustable scope mounts.
Anyone know how to find them ?
I have been searching the interweb..... to no avail.

The website is really like a display of his work and products he sells. He builds per order. You tell him what you would like, he builds it, you pay when it’s done, and he ships it out to you. Pretty simple and a really good guy to talk to on the phone.

Re: My New Box
My suggestion to Greg would be to change the wording to "sample" or "example of ___". When I first saw the page, I originally started to think that many of the boxes were no longer available.
Better yet, no wording at all, jus "Example Boxes" at the top of the page.

I will try buzzing him to see about the Jones scope mounts.
Thanks

Re: My New Box
I took it to the range for the first time this week. I liked it. Worked well. Had compliments on it by people that weren't even bullseye shooters.

Re: My New Box
I recently bought a small 2-gun box from Greg, for my son. I was very impressed by the build and materials quality. It wasn't cheap, but worth every penny. When my old Pachmayr box reaches its end of life, I will definitely order a new one from Greg.

I want to see your rapid fire using the flint from that box on your magnet!

I borrowed the idea of an Altoid tin from a picture of Greg’s box to store small items, sight adjustment tool, batteries, etc. I had one I used to keep gun flints in for a pistol I no longer have. So I recycled the tin and didn’t remove the label. Thought it was good joke to myself. I was wondering how long it would take until someone mentioned it. You win!

Another endorsement for Greg's boxes. I received mine this week. Very happy with the box. Great build quality and very usable at the range. Greg packs the boxes very carefully for shipment. Here's mine, just taken out of the shipping box and still wrapped

Re: My New Box
Just wanted to share with all of you that have one of Greg's boxes, I have been using one for 4-5 years and have flown with it many times, a big upgrade (very cheap and easy) is to get rid of the center latch and put two side latches on, much more secure and sturdy. I will try to post a picture.
