Guide rod for 1911s
First topic message reminder :
In your opinion, is there a real benefit to installing a recoil spring guide rod on a 1911? What are the benefits you experienced? Reliability, accuracy, something else?
Thanks,
-Shooting new guy

@james- Your dimensions are spot on. I checked the actual angle of the hole and it is 60º as you specified.
Have you seen the CAD 1911 drawing document -- M1911-A1_REDUX.pdf ? That file has been my go to for pulling dimensions. You can find it easily via Google search.
Nice job on the CAD drawing. You inspired me a bit this morning to do some drawing myself, but I do more 3Dmodeling than blueprint style. This is the EGW FLGR. 3D just gives you such a good visual, but 2D is most readable for dimensioning, so why not have both?

Re: Guide rod for 1911s
What kind of recoil spring guides do bullseye gunsmiths put in their builds? Do they mostly use a Short GI recoil spring guide rod? I have a Dan Wesson with a very tight bushing and a flgr and I need to turn the bushing with a wrench in full lock up to get it out. Should I put a GI guide rod in?
Thanks,
Jeff

My Clark Custom uses the short GI recoil guide rod.

Re: Guide rod for 1911s
I'd like to be able to use a full length guide rod in this manner with my Springfield RO, but the spring plug will not pass out through the rear. The last 1/16" of the channel the plug slides in has a reduced diameter that prevents the plug from being removed like is shown in the photos. Has anyone else run into this?

That's an RO thing. The slide can be set up and bored through to accommodate what you want to do.
Any gunsmith that is actually a gunsmith should be able to do that.

Not all. Some have a pin hole to capture the compressed spring. Others, like Dawson have a rocker which captures the spring. Once the spring is captured, remove the FLGR with captured spring. Then you can ease the slide back, or pull the barrel forward, so that bushing is not turned, when barrel is in full forward locked position.Jon Eulette wrote:No benefit to accuracy. If you use one make sure it is a 2 pc rod. 1 pc rod will damage bushing/barrel lockup (gall) because you have to twist bushing while in full battery.

On Springfield pistols the slide doesn’t allow the recoil spring plug to come out the rear. So as you know most one piece guide rods are a royal pain. Obviously more than one way to skin a cat.

Re: Guide rod for 1911s
I had a 2 puece in my LB. Got tired of wrestling with unscrewing it to pull the barrel for a proper cleaning. Put the 'GI' parts back in, much less hassle.
The other reason for it was to swap the Nelson on, but it hasn't been touched for a year or more ...
If I get serious about using that I'll buy another frame.
