Colt Gold Cup barrel
I am considering changing out the original 5 inch Series 80 Gold Cup barrel for a compensated barrel. I will be using the gun for Bullseye matches and think the comped barrel will aid in rapid fire. Does any one have an opinion on this? Will the comp interfere with accuracy? If this is a good idea what would you recommend as a replacement barrel? I have been using 185 LSWC with 4.0 BE which is pretty accurate in this pistol.

Generally I have heard the smith's say that the 45 doesn't have enough velocity, especially with our pet loads, to benefit from a comp.

You might consider having a good bulleye smith tune the pistol with the existing barrel, could be that you might be able to get it to function accurately with the same bullet and 3.7 grains of BE and gain with the decrease of recoil.

My experience with a comp on a 9mm race gun you need petty hot loads to get the comp to work well. The more ports the comp has the hotter the load needs to be. Don

Ruby Fox used comped 45 with Federal Match 185's to shoot 2650 (I was standing next to her when she shot it!) and later 2660. They work fine. Just not as efficient as the faster 9mm and 38 Super. They do soften the recoil noticeably.

I heard that Ruby had a comped .38 Super too. Do you think it is the compensator that gives the reduced recoil or simply the extra weight the comp gives at the muzzle?Jon Eulette wrote:Ruby Fox used comped 45 with Federal Match 185's to shoot 2650 (I was standing next to her when she shot it!) and later 2660. There is some recoil reduction from a comped Barrel. But the extra mass out there reduces muzzle climb from the slide hitting the frame. So a win win

Thanks for all the suggestions. Reading through the Forum I see David Salyer has a great reputation for accessorizing 1911s. I'm going to get in touch with him after the holidays.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.
