Accurate No. 5 load data
Hey all!
Can anyone share a good starting bullseye load using Zero 185 HPLSWC and Accurate No. 5 powder? Gun is a series 70 Gold Cup with a 12# spring, primarily shot right now at 25 yards. Searched the forum, but couldn't find anything. The local store was out of Bullseye, so this is what I ended up with!
Thanks!
Dave

Re: Accurate No. 5 load data
I have a copy of Accurate's #1 manual:
On page 129 under .45 ACP Wadcutter loads they show the following for Accurate #5 powder.
Bullet, HDY 185 TGT, starting load, 6.8 grains of #5 at 726 fps, max is 7.5 grains at 825 fps
Bullet, 200 Lead SWC, starting load, 6.3 grains of #5 at 720 fps, max is 7.0 grains at 818 fps
For a comparison, under regular .45 ACP loads, they show a Lead 230 RN bullet with 7.7 grains of #5 as a start load at 852 fps, max is 8.5 grains of #5 at 968 fps.
The manual describes #5 as suitable for the .45 ACP, with a burn rate slightly lower than Unique.

Re: Accurate No. 5 load data
That helps tremendously. On Accurate's load data (which was just
posted above!), they have a lead swc 185 listed with a starting load of 8.0 grains of no. 5 at a velocity of 925. Was hoping to start much lower. Looks like I'll try 6.8 and go from there.
Thanks!

From all accounts I’ve read it seems Accutate No. 5 tends to be dirty at the lower end, unturned powder and all that. If you can swap for No 2.

Well, I haven't opened it yet. Maybe it's best to trade in for no. 2? Anything else work well for me besides Bullseye?Wobbley wrote:From all accounts I’ve read it seems Accutate No. 5 tends to be dirty at the lower end, unturned powder and all that. If you can swap for No 2.

If you can find some IMR Target, it loads the same as Bullseye.

Re: Accurate No. 5 load data
Powders that give me the best accuracy in .45 auto:
231/HP38
Red Dot
AA2
Bullseye
Solo 1000
PS: I've never had a failure due to "dirty" powder and I shot 5.0gn of Unique with 200gn L-SWC for a couple of years and only cleaned the gun about once a year.

Re: Accurate No. 5 load data
Thanks for all the replies. Looked at my receipt, apparently powders aren't returnable. So it looks like I'll be giving no. 5 a shot!
I generally clean every 500 rounds or so anyway....
