Camp Perry Lodging Open Empty Camp Perry Lodging Open

Post by SteveT 4/2/2018, 11:09 pm

I went to the Camp Perry Lodging website for find out when pistol week housing opens for individuals, and found that it opened last week on Thursday. I don't remember seeing any messages about the change, but I've been busy and could have missed it.

I got a hut and it sounds like plenty were still available an hour ago. Good luck.

Camp Perry Lodging Open Empty Re: Camp Perry Lodging Open

Post by EGB 4/3/2018, 4:08 pm

Thanks for the reminder - called this morning and reserved a hut for the family.  According to the lodging team, everything besides huts and barracks are all full.  My question concerns bringing a toddler and spouse to Perry for the weekend and hut living.  Any suggestions for making their experience as enjoyable as the Perry weather makes possible?  Planning to bring a laptop with DVDs and mini-fridge.  Does anyone have details on the shower/bathhouse.  Logistics with a little one are somewhat important since I'd like to create some great family memories...

Bathrooms and showers are hundreds of feet away or closer depending which hut you got, they are large brick buildings with a Mens side an Female side. They have sinks, showers (brick walls with curtain),urinals and toilets(with locking stalls).  The huts will have 4 beds with plastic coverage mattress (bring your own sheets and pillows). Each bed has its own locker. Each huts has one of those hotel A/C  heaters. Family would probably enjoy Port Clinton and the beach of Lake Erie.

If you have stayed at a camp ground you will have a good idea of what the bathrooms are like. They are mostly concrete and cinder block, but the fixtures were updated a few years ago. They are not fancy, but they are cleaned daily, though they often run out of paper towels in the morning (they clean and restock mid-morning). As mentioned it is a walk to the bathrooms, bring flip-flops or shower shoes and maybe a robe or shorts. If you (or your wife and child) prefers to be outside, a portable shade canopy and chairs & table for outside the hut is nice. Mosquitoes can be a problem depending on the weather. They are not usually too bad in the day, but can be brutal in the evening.

If you are concerned about the walk, call the clubhouse and ask to be put in a hut near the bathrooms. The staff try to accommodate us as much as they can. Call back a week or so before you arrive to verify the request has been noted.

Cell phone service has improved over the years, but depending on your service may not be great. Don't expect WiFi on base except at the clubhouse and airgun range.

This is normal. They usually reserve all the cabins, motel rooms and transient quarters for staff and military. If you want one of these options, call the clubhouse every week asking if anything is available. I've done it in the past and it's worked out. They usually finalize lodging a few weeks before the event, so you are most likely to get lucky in June. The motel rooms are about like a shabby motel, run-down and outdated, but comfortable and clean. They are fairly spacious and have a bathroom and kitchenette inside (and cable TV). Transient quarters and barracks wouldn't work well for a family. Cabins would work, but I've never heard of them being available, still it's worth asking if that is what you want.

There is a beach, small play area and a pier out by the cabins and clubhouse. It's not fancy, but young kids can find joy almost anywhere. I believe you can fish off the pier (not sure about permission and permits) if he/she would like that. You can see lots of boats on the lake, but more from town since there is an exclusion area around Camp Perry.

There are some hiking/biking paths and wildlife viewing areas along the lake. I've stopped at one just west of Perry on rt 2.

Take air mattress.  The supplied mattress look good, but they are slightly softer compared to concrete.  Huts are Spartan but exceptionally clean.  Take muck boots as when it rains it turns into a mud bog

Looks like some huts are still available (as of my call last night).  Good luck this year!

As we get closer to the dates, people cancel and housing opens up. Some groups book as much as possible and then cancel a week or two before.
