Model 39 for EIC?
I was perusing CMP's high power rifle/pistol competition regs and noticed the S&W Model 39 listed as an authorized service pistol. I was considering the Beretta M9, which I deployed with many times, but feel the grip too large for bullseye. I have a Model 52 in my stable, and must say that I was pleasantly surprised to see the Model 39 on the EIC service pistol list. However, it seems the Model 39 is not discussed much at all here. Is it not worth accurizing, or simply better to go with a 9mm M1911?
Thanks in advance!

IHAVE IN THE PAST RANSOM REST TESTED A MDL 39 AT 50YDS. ITALMOST HELD 10 RING. AFTERMARKET BARREL MAY HELP. I BELIEVE JARVIS USED TO MAKE THEM. BUT FOR BEST ACCURACY 1911 IN 9MM WILL BE REALLY TOUGH TO BEAT. JP

You could do worse with a Glock, Springfield XD or many of the pistols on the list. The 39 is a well made gun and will hold its own. You should get the trigger worked on and find a good load that groups well.

Best choice of bullet I ever found was the 147gr RNBT from Hornady. Serious problems trying to use HP bullets with the 39. The feed ramp just does not like Nosler or Hornady but might work with the Zeros since they have a much rounder nose and smaller cavity. Nothing hurts the score worse then ammo that won't feed.

Wow, many thanks for the great comments and suggestions! If I resurrect the ol' Model 39 in my safe I'll keep you posted.

This may be for the ammo forum, but doesn't one have to use M882 9mm for the EIC matches? Also, I've been trying to pin down the specs for M882 and have seen bullet weights all over the place. This may have a bearing on whether or not I dig out the Model 39 as a project gun.

I think it is now any safe jacketed or plated ammo. They no longer issue any ammo on the line.
