Marvel conversion first round problems
What happens: First round in the magazine goes nose up and bends, jammed above the hole. This has happened on and off over time, but now happens 9 out of 10 times. It does not bounce off the feed ramp.
What I've done to correct:
- made sure I pull the slide all the back and hold the gun firm
- made sure first round is seated right in the mag
- made sure there are no damaged parts
- cleaned everything; clean like a whistle
- correct lubrication
- cleaned the mags
Now, this only happens with the GSG magazines, all three of them, exactly the same. I have one metalform magazine, and it functions fine; I can't get it to malfunction with it. I have a high magazine catch. I probably screwed something up, but can't divine it.
I suspect solutions would be to get more metalform magazines, or replace the springs in the GSG mags. Both maddeningly unsatisfying. My wife is tired of hearing me complain about my Marvel, so much so, I've been given permission to buy the Pardini. However, I want the Marvel to work (and get the Pardini).

Two things I can think of:
You might try the standard mag catch again? Check and make sure the very bottom of the slide (where it strips off the round from the magazine is not hitting the magazine or scraping it anywhere.
And if the marvel locking lug is starting to shear or crack, it can cause the some issues as well related to feeding. You think the rod is tight, but then it works loose. The process continues as the crack gets worse until you get to order a new barrel.
(But don't try anything until you get the Pardini. Never waste permission once you get it)

Re: Marvel conversion first round problems
My Marvel does the same thing with GSG mags. Two things that I think help reduce the misfeeds are:
1. Holding the gun so that the bore is parallel to the ground and the sides are perpendicular to the ground when chambering the first round
2. Pulling the slide all the way back, then releasing the slide from full aft position (aka slingshot method) rather than holding onto the slide during forward motion of chambering
Those things feel like treating the symptoms rather than the real issue but hopefully helps a bit

I am going to get the Pardini, Cecil. Its kinda crazy; there's no cracks and nothing particularly new. Mag release has been the same for years; although, I'll put the old mag release on, to see if it ameliorates the reverse nose dive issue.
HogCommander, you're right about slingshot and level. Hold still, too. Even with that, its release the slide then *gaaack*. Grrrrr.

Great!
Forgot to add. If you have changed the rib, remounted a scope, etc., check and make sure the rail and slide are not interfering.
I haven't seen on GSG mags, but the plastic ones can get a groove in the feed lips from the rim of the .22 cartridge that kinda holds the round a little and will interfere with a smooth feed. The rim of the .22 round is what makes contact with the feed lips as the next round comes up the magazine each time (in pretty much the same place). I've seen older 41 mags with a noticeable groove worn in at that one point. That really makes the magazine hold on that little .22 round a lot more.
I'd be happy to look at it at the next match to see if I can spot anything. But you're probably pretty much covered it all already.

You can solve your GSG issues by switching to Nelson magazines.
Cheaper than a Pardini and the Nelson mags took care of my similar GSG issues. I saved the GSG mags for plinking, not when it counts.

Contact me if you need Nelson magazines. The GSG's run a lot better in my lowers. I have a stack of Nelsons collecting dust.

Re: Marvel conversion first round problems
Okay, Cecil, I'm bringing my Marvel perversion to the match tomorrow. If you could look at it, after the match, at your leisure, I'd appreciate it. I'll include 50 rounds to bend up. I've spent more time messing with it and I give up. I have new love in my life (after Amy) and her name is Pardini.
Thank you-
