Magnum Small Pistol Primers in non-magnum (light) loads?
Per another current thread, Federal SPPs are virtually unavailable. I need them for my revolver (light trigger),
I have been using magnum primers this without issue (lighter loads). However, curious if there are any potential issues. Federal small pistol mag primers are readily available. Won't go into why Federal, being covered in the other thread.

Winchester primers are for standard and magnum loads

Winchester makes only one large pistol primer for use in standard and magnum loads (WLP), but they make two small pistol primers, standard (WSP) and magnum (WSPM).

Didn’t know that.

Should work no problem, maybe go 10th lower on the charge?
I use Tula primers they are good no problem.
I believe remington makes small pistol primers and they are soft.

Some say that magnum primers increase velocity due to hotter ignition to ignite the slower powders, others say the cup is harder to prevent primer flow.
If I needed to use them, I would back down the powder charge 10% to see where the numbers are and readjust the charge weight.

Since I am using them for non magnum loads, I am already lower on the charge, more than 10%. Plus, in my case, I am shooting 38spc in a S&W 686 (357 magnum) so not worried about increased velocity.
I couldn't think of any safety related issues, but wanted to ask. Federal small pistol primers are readily available, and I know they ignite in my modified revolvers, which is the only guns in which I have any issues. Thx for the responses.

Re: Magnum Small Pistol Primers in non-magnum (light) loads?
Greetings,
Years ago, I tested various primers, regular and magnum, in 32 WadCutter loads.
All shot the same velocity with one exception.
The Winchester WSPM, small pistol magnum, produced velocities 25 FPS higher than the others.
Cheers,
Dave

Re: Magnum Small Pistol Primers in non-magnum (light) loads?
I have used Federal Mag primers for over 20 years in my 38 loads, ever since my Python would fail to set rounds off when shooting DA. I chose to only use Mag primers because I did not want to worry about mixing up primers when loading 357. I only load for 148 wadcutters at 2.7 gr WST, same load many others use with non-mag SPP. I did not bother dropping the powder charge, since it works and recoil is already light.

I have used mag primers in 38 spec using Bullseye powder, 158 gr lswc, for years. No problems.
Mag primes are also used with all ball powder.
When i load 357 mag, with 4227, 110, 296 or 2400, i already have primers and no need to take up space with 5000 standard primers.
The WLP works well in 45 acp or 44 mag for me also. Only one Win makes in LP.

Re: Magnum Small Pistol Primers in non-magnum (light) loads?
I always test new loads with both regular and magnum primers.
Working up a 9mm revolver load for steel challenge I settled on this:
LRN 135 Bullseye GR: 2.8 LO: 848 HI: 902 AVG: 878 ES: 54 SD: 10.12 Fed Std Primer PF: 118.53
LRN 135 Bullseye GR: 2.8 LO: 855 HI: 891 AVG: 874 ES: 36 SD: 9.01 Fed Mag Primer PF: 118.008
Could not believe it and tested again with the same results.
Found the same to be true with my "38 Mid" load with Bullseys.
