Wad gun, will shoot target loads made with semi-wadutter lead bullets, a ball gun is used for CMP matches that require the use of 230 grain full metal jacket bullets.

Re: Newbe question
A wad gun conforms to NRA Conventional Pistol rules. A ball gun conforms to CMP rules for Excellence In Competition matches. A ball gun must use ammunition that has a 230 gr. full metal jacket bullet (ball ammo). The pistol must outwardly appear very close to the issued GI 1911 or 1911a1 pistol, with certain exceptions. It may be internally accurized. The trigger weight must not be less than 4 pounds. The ball gun may have adjustable iron sights (no optical sights allowed).
The NRA wadgun may have many different modifications, including custom oversize grips, weights, full length sight rib, scope (red dot) or iron sights. It may have a beavertail grip safety. The trigger weight minimum is 3.5 pounds. The wadgun is what is usually fired in NRA outdoor and indoor matches, but a ball gun does conform to the rules and may be used. The term wadgun comes from the type of ammo used in NRA Conventional Pistol (Bullseye) matches. These guns are built to function with semi-wadcutter bullets. The powder charge is pretty low to keep recoil to a minimum, while producing great accuracy.
Either gun may be may have a bright (stainless steel, chrome, nickel) finish, as well as, painted or blued steel.
