Need help for proper crimp for 38 special
What style crimp to use for Zero and Magnus 158 swc since the shoulder isn't a driving band and has no crimp groove. I taper crimp .45 swc mainly because case seats on it's mouth not rim like .38 specials. Does anyone use these bullets and would you expose the shoulder down to the driving band, which leaves about a .10" shoulder exposed. Would you roll crimp it there? Shoulder diameter .349" and driving band is .358" I"m using Starline brass case thickness .010", if taper crimp on driving band above lube groove to shoulder would .375" be too tight. Or just roll crimp over driving band to shoulder be proper. Thanks

If you’re using the Magnus number 503 it’s got a crimp groove. What bullet model number are you using from Magnus?
I seat my 45’s to where only a small amount of shoulder is above the case. My 38’s - which I cast myself - have a crimp groove, the seat depth is already predetermined there. The variables left to play with are powder choice, charge amount, and primer choice.... and brass if you are the type to sort head stamps.
The Magnus No. 503 has a crimp groove and it’s a cast bullet. The Zero bullet is a swaged bullet and one I’m not familiar with. If you say it doesn’t have a crimp groove then it may not. But I seat Bullets to a depth shown in reloading manuals when in doubt - unless more target appropriate data is found on this forum.

I use a roll crimp even though there is no crimping grove. The bullets are soft enough that this is no problem. I had a box of Remington that I copied the OAL.

Magnus 516 and Zero 110, they look exactly the same. Len, I think a roll crimp also. Tim, I'll post a picture when I can get my phone to transfer it to the computer.

I don’t know if it’s a roll crimp or taper crimp. I use a Lee die and crimp and seat at the same stage for 38 on a three hole turret press Lee made.

I think I'll lightly roll crimp above the lube groove where it steps down to the shoulder. I'll put in about 3.3 of WST to start out, maybe check the speed if it groups good out of 6" M14 @50yds. Should be plenty of room for it in the cylinder.

3.3 works pretty well at the LL but I've never had a reload group as well as factory new 158 ball
3.0 WST at the short line

Re: Need help for proper crimp for 38 special
I've been using the Magnus #516 seated to 1.50 COL. 3.5 gr. Titegroup for the long line and 3.1 for the short line. There is a faint crimp groove just above the lube ring, and that's where I taper crimp.

I would call Terry at Magnus. He can let you know how far to seat the bullet.
He also give Bullseye-L members a discount when you order directly through him.
