At the tender age of 71 I've decided to take up the sport of Bullseye Pistol Shooting. I like the idea of slow, deliberate, and accurate shooting. Running and gunning is not very appealing at my age. I've been shooting handguns and rifles most of my life, but not very well. I do OK from a bench rest and close quarters 2 handed pistol shooting, but shooting a pistol with one hand at 25 and 50 yards will be a real challenge for me. I came to this forum by way of recommendations from folks on the 1911 Forum. I've been reading a number of posts on the Fundamentals section and am in awe of the wealth of knowledge here. Hopefully in the near future I can ask an intelligent question or two, but for now I'll just read all the information already posted. So far I've just been learning about, and practicing stance, position and dry firing. My one trip to the range last week was a bit dissapointing since it was all I could do to keep most of my shots on the target backer at 25 yards. Lots of room for improvement. I have a couple of pistols that should work well for this discipline ; a Les Baer PremierII and a S&W M41. They will both soon be fitted with Ultradot scopes since my old shooting eye has a lot of trouble focusing on the front sight.
Thanks for such an informative forum.

Welcome to the forum!
This is a great place to pick up a ton of information. The bullseye encyclopedia is also very helpful.

Welcome to the list and to the sport of bullseye. It can seem like a daunting task to hit the target with one hand but you will get the hang of it. If you can find a league around you or a few people in your area that compete, you will be able to learn all about things. One tip I will give would be to start with your model 41 and progress from there. It's a lot easier to master the 22 and it easier to see some of your mistakes before they become bad habits. Once you are comfortable, you can add the .45 into the mix. Keep us up on your progress, and never hesitate to ask questions. This is a helpful bunch. Good luck.

I think the best thing to recognize is that you only shoot against yourself. Don't compete with anyone else. Build up the strength in your upper body as best as you can. Particularly your arms, shoulders, and back. don't neglect your legs either. Above all Have fun!!!!!

Kim your going to love shooting bullseye, I didn't start shooting pistols regular until 6years ago mostly IDPA. Then I got asked to shoot on a NRA postal league, I'm starting my third full year this winter, it is so enjoyable.
You got a great .22 that'll carry you for years of service and satisfaction. Like John posted master that 22 and get comfortable with it then introduce the 45, wished I would have. 22 ammo has drop in price now, get a case of CCI standard velocity those M41s love it and have fun.

Welcome Kim. I'm pleased to see another old guy starting Bullseye shooting.
I'll just give you this one warning. It's addictive, it's humbling, and it can be rewarding, and fun.
The guns you mention will take you as far as you want to go. And you can shoot well with open sights too, if you want.
Just remember to have fun, and follow the fundamentals.
