Slide base
What is the better base for slide mount dot. This will be going on a 45 1911 for BE. I started looking at Clark Custom bases. Seems like there quality control is hit and miss these days.
Thank you for your help.

Re: Slide base
The Marvel Custom Guns bases are the nicest looking (anodized) and finish machined mounts.

I'm happy with this RRA Base
It's low profile, it covers up the rear sight cut very well.
The screws are already trimmed to the correct size too which is nice.

I like the al marvel one as well. The rock river has the most slots

One thing on the rock river base that I didn't appreciate at first was the slight bump at the back of the base to assist with cocking. It's a subtle, but nice feature.

Agree on the RRA Grasping Feature
It's a very good grip, I'd get a mental block going if I had to grab my dot and rack the slide, I see some shooters do it but it's not for me. I'd constantly worry about the stress on the optic.

I do like the idea the base is rounded on the slid side. Does make for a better fit.

Re: Slide base
If the gun is tuned right for ejection then this won’t matter so much - but unless the gun was tuned by someone who really knows how to make the casing exit the gun without hitting your red dot then I highly recommend the Al Marvel scope base. It’s got a deflector that shields your optic so it doesn’t get chewed up by the brass.
I have a Jon Eulette wad gun and use the Al Marvel scope base per his recommendation but it doesn’t seem to be hitting the deflector because he knows how to make these guns work right. I also have a Dave Salyer wad gun and although it’s accurate it chews the hell out of an optic. It has a Clark Custom scope base and provided no protection for the optic. So at some point I need this guns ejection tuned. Right now I’m taping up the optic to protect it.
Just something else to consider. I don’t know who built your gun.

Gun is a factory gun. So nothing has been done to it yet.

Then I think that if you get anything else but the Marvel base you'll see your dot get chewed up.

Re: Slide base
its not rocket science to tube an ejector and extractor or installed a new ejector and tuning the ejector and extractor.

Re: Slide base
it's also quite easy to take some of the rubber adhesive backed non slip tape and fit it to the bottom of your UD.. works perfectly to stop the case from dinging up the Dot. doesn't affect ejection at all
I've done this to all my UDs for the last 4 years..
BTW the Cover RRA base was specifically made to work on the RO slides but work on others with the deep bomar style cut. the std. RRA works fine on GI sight cut slides or slides with no cuts at all.. Clarks are fine but Marvels are the nicest out there..

Re: Slide base
The Gun is a ruger SR1911 target. I was lucky to test fire it before I bought it. Had a friend that is a master shooter test fire it. He could not believe how accurate out-of-the-box gun it is. Ruger claims the port is lowered.
I'm not sure what it takes to tune one as I'm not a Smith. I like the Marvel and the RRA. Wish I had both in hand to see what I like better.

What if the slide has a flat top?

Re: Slide base
While proper tension on the extractor and the correct length ejector are important. If you don't want your brass hitting your dot make sure the ejection port is low enough and has the proper bevel on the inside. This also prevents your brass from getting beat to hell as well.
Re: Slide base
I’m curious about this tape.can you provide to what type? Or where to get it?jglenn21 wrote:it's also quite easy to take some of the rubber adhesive backed non slip tape and fit it to the bottom of your UD.. works perfectly to stop the case from dinging up the Dot. doesn't affect ejection at all
