Information to help choose off the shelf .45 acp ammo.
I am looking for information to help choose off the shelf .45 acp ammo.
I read information here such as "185 JHP, 800 FPS, results in 1.25 inch groups regularly."
At ammo.com almost all the .45 ammo is self defense. Where can I find more target ammo?
Here is a typical choice from the limited economical selection at ammo.com.
Winchester 45 Auto Ammo -
50 Rounds of
185 Grain FMJ Ammunition,
910 FPS Muzzle Velocity,
340 ft lbs Muzzle Energy,
$18.75
37.5¢ Cost Per Round
Before shipping charge (15.00)
Here is another candidate.
Federal 45 Auto Ammo -
50 Rounds of
185 Grain FMJ-Semi Wadcutter Ammunition
770 FPS Muzzle Velocity
244 ft lbs Muzzle Energy
$30.00
60¢ Cost Per Round
Before shipping charge (15.00)
The second one costs almost twice as much but seems to have more desirable features for target ammo.
Total Shipping is 15.00 total for 1 box or
15.00 total for 10 boxes. It's cost effective to stock up.
185 grain reloaded projectile matches.
910 FPS is close to 800 FPS reloaded.
What other range of statistical information can help when choosing off-the-shelf ammo?
Thank you for your responses.
Once I have amortized the cost of my BE guns and red dots, I will reload again. But not.44 magnum with a Lee handloader set and a wooden mallet. Good times.

I have used the Federal ammo, at 25 yards 1.25 inch 5 shot groups is possible, 1.25" at 50 yards would be pretty impressive with any ammo from a 45acp. Wilson combat has some 200 grain lead swc. that is loaded around 750-800 if I remember.

The federal Match ammo should shoot well because that's what it is intended to do.
Other places to look are Zero Ammo. Their 185 and 200 lead SWC and 185 JHP bullets are very well known for their accuracy and used by bullseye shooters in their handloads.

ASYM also makes 45 match ammo. Look for the stuff named 'Match'.

Wilson Combat makes match 45 ammo. Look for the Bill Wilson Signature Match ammo.

I used a lot of Wilson Combat 200 LSWC before I started reloading. It is really good ammo and relatively low priced.

For off-the-shelf ammo, try ammofast.com. Flat rate shipping for $9.95 on orders up to 25 lbs.

Re: Information to help choose off the shelf .45 acp ammo.
Greetings,
Visit your local Gun Show.
Run and Gunners do not prefer "target" ammo.
You can often find old 38 WadCutter and 45 ACP WadCutter at reasonable prices.
Look for Federal, Monark, TargetMaster (Remington, Peter, Police Match).
The best choice for 45 ACP is the 185 grain FMJWC.
Quite often, the ammo is from the Estate of a former Military shooter. This is good as the ammo is better than the usual off the shelf stuff.
Cheers,
Dave
