Jacketed ammo in target barrels
OK I got some great responses to my post about target ammo for a non-reloader. The last one brings me to a new question. Does jacketed ammo damage a target barrel such as a Kart or one of he other custom makers? I have always used only lead in my target guns, except for my .32ACP which I use the Hornaday jacketed bullet.

I don't believe that the pressure, or velocity is great enough to cause wear anything like a a high power target rifle would receive.

99% of the “wear” in a rifle barrel is erosion from the powder gases.

All I know is my first Kart was done in 30,000 rds. All of those were either jacketed or very hard cast lead that was also water quenched.
It's replacement, also a kart, has well over 50,000 rds & is still holding 2" and less. All with soft cast or zero. Just an observation from my limited experience.

Even the hardest lead alloy is very soft compared to steel. Copper is also softer than steel.
Also, this is a better question to ask the manufacturer.

I'd say it's from over cleaning. For certain I'd say more crowns are destroyed by cleaning rods than anything else.Wobbley wrote:99% of the “wear” in a rifle barrel is erosion from the powder gases.
