Opinion on S&W 625? Empty Opinion on S&W 625?

Post by javaduke Wed Oct 16, 2019 4:19 pm

I know it's a blasphemy but I want to try something different for the .45 game. How does S&W 625 shoot lead bullets? My plan is to get Wilson Combat springs and lighten the trigger to 2 1/2 lbs (oddly enough, I just checked the rules, 2 1/2 is a legal trigger weight for .45 revolvers), and install Jack Weigand mini scope mount. And maybe get a wide spur hammer. Anything I'm missing?
I guess I need 5" barrel - or will a shorter barrel perform?

I haven’t shot it yet but I bought a S&W 625JM and plan on mounting an optic on it, and using it for Harry Reeves maybe. That or just fun plinking/training. I already lowered the rebound spring poundage in it but I might go a little further. Nice gun overall. I’m anxious to shoot it. Just haven’t found time lately. I’ll let you know how it turns out.

Greetings,

The older models have broach rifled barrels. New ones are EDM rifled.

Group at 50 yards with my 625-4 (Broached Rifling)

Wow, impressive target Dave, especially with a revolver.  Do you fire it single action for timed and double action for rapid fire?   I would think rapid fire double action would be tough.

Here are a couple of targets fired RF, SA. Fired with my25-2. Not a 625 but close enough. I like shooting Reeves matches with it. Of course I didn't save my two worst targets. Very Happy

Greetings,

I need to clarify that my test target is 12 shots fired via the Random Rest.

Seems the only difference between the 25 and 625 is the latter is Stainless.

I actually prefer Stainless as it cleans up in the ultrasonic better.

Also, no bluing to wear off.

Back when I was shooting in my prime, I fired the revolver single action. I also had an AimPoint MagDot 5000 mounted on it.

Cheers,

Dave

I have one and I like it. Spring job, slicked up guts, scope mount, Fitz grip.  Really fun to shoot single hand, but never shot it for a match, but will ring steel nicely at 50-yd.

Heavy overall weight, light 2.5lb trigger, and target loads make it a kitten to shoot.

You guys are really annoying me!

Just when I got my "Ultimate" Reeves gun working. K16-4 32 with SIG Romeo 5 and PhotoEscape shades. You guys start flashing your "manly" 45's. Grrrr.....

Just sold a gun. Money burning. Back to GunBroker like a bloody addict!

It's hard to have too many Reeves guns. Check out the 25-2 Model of 1955 when you start looking.

My wife no longer asks how many 45s there are or how many I need.  I just keep buying her shiny stuff and she stays out of my safes.  What a Face

Well, I recently posted WTB OEM grips for Smith & Wesson 1955 .45 Target Model Pre-25 C&R 5-Screw 6 1/2" Heavy Barrel Revolver, MFD 1955.  There were no offers, so now I must buy another gun Sad .  So I had this one (and couple of others too) on my watch list.  However will not bid now.  I know the seller, - previously purchased from them.  Great people.

Side question though, - moon clips?  I don't believe it is avoidable with 45ACP.  Is it?
